*Warning – contains spoilers for Marshals episode 1.*
Although the original Yellowstone show finished in 2024, the story isn’t over. A new series called Marshals, part of the Yellowstone universe, has now launched on Paramount+.
Luke Grimes is back as Kayce Dutton in the new series. This time, Kayce has left the Yellowstone Ranch and is working with a special group of US Marshals, using his experience as both a cowboy and a Navy SEAL.
The show’s summary reveals that Kayce and his team will struggle to juggle their personal lives, their responsibilities, and the emotional toll of being the last protectors against rising violence in the area.
The strong family themes were immediately apparent in the premiere episode, which recently aired. It was revealed that Kayce is now a single father, raising his son Tate (played by Brecken Merrill) on his own.

As viewers suspected from the trailer, Kayce’s wife, Monica—played by Kelsey Asbille throughout the five seasons of Yellowstone—has passed away.
The character experienced a severe head injury early in Yellowstone’s first season. However, it was later shown in Marshals that she actually died from cancer, caused by harmful substances present on the reservation.
This episode really hit me with Kayce’s internal struggle. He’s clearly wrestling with the idea that Monica is just naturally better at parenting than he is, and it’s heartbreaking. He puts it so powerfully – he believes losing a parent is awful, but losing the wrong parent – the one who should have been there – is even more devastating. It’s a really raw and honest moment, and it felt incredibly relatable.

I’m really excited to see some familiar faces like Michael Greyeyes (Grimes) and Zahn McClarnon (Merrill) back for this new series! And it’s great that Mo Brings Plenty and Gil Birmingham are joining them. But honestly, the show is largely built around a bunch of new actors – Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, and Tatanka Means – which is a cool way to refresh things and bring some fresh energy to the story.
Yellowstone has a history of unexpectedly removing important characters, and it recently happened again – just like with Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton, at the beginning of the show’s last episodes.
Besides projects still being planned, the only confirmed Yellowstone spin-off currently in production is ‘The Dutton Ranch,’ which will feature Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser.
Originally, reports suggested the new Michelle Pfeiffer series, The Madison, would take place in the world of Yellowstone. However, that information is now incorrect.
Marshals airs new episodes weekly on Mondays on Paramount+.
