The first episodes of the fifth and final season of Stranger Things are now available on Netflix. While the show is heading towards its conclusion, the story isn’t finished yet. Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things has become incredibly popular, growing beyond just the TV show to include a stage play, a planned spin-off series, video games, merchandise, novels (like the recent one taking place between seasons 4 and 5), and even comics – which some fans may have forgotten about!
In 2018, Dark Horse Comics began a multi-year collaboration with Netflix to create comics based on the show Stranger Things. Since then, they’ve published numerous comic series, individual issues, and graphic novels. They even teamed up with IDW Publishing for crossover stories combining Stranger Things with Dungeons & Dragons and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While it’s common for TV shows to get adapted into comics, the Stranger Things comics are surprisingly good—many people enjoy them even if they haven’t seen the Netflix series.
The Stranger Things Comics Dig Deeper Into the Events of the Netflix Show But Aren’t Exactly Companions

The Stranger Things comics generally expand on the show’s storyline with new adventures, often focusing on individual characters. For example, one comic series explores Will Byers’ time in the Upside Down, and another puts Dustin in the spotlight between seasons two and three. However, not all the comics directly connect to specific events in the show. The ‘Six’ series tells the story of Francine, a test subject who was experimented on before Eleven, and ‘Into the Fires’ continues Francine’s story.
Some of the most fascinating stories in the Stranger Things comics aren’t just about the main characters—they delve into the broader history of Hawkins and the world around it. Titles like Six, Into the Fire, and The Tomb of Ybwen offer intriguing small-town mysteries that add depth to the setting. There are also comics that explore the Russian storyline, which is best enjoyed with some knowledge of the show, but still enjoyable on its own.
Even For Non-Stranger Things Fans, the Comics Are Solid
The Stranger Things comics are enjoyable even if you only know the show – you don’t need to be a super-fan to appreciate them. They’re well-written stories that stand on their own, and the first comic series is a perfect example, feeling like a classic horror story where a character unexpectedly finds themselves in a terrifying situation. Most of the comics capture a similar vibe, presenting familiar elements as straightforward horror, and they’re all crafted with a strong sense of tension that keeps you hooked, much like the show itself encourages binge-watching.
The artwork in these comics is consistently excellent. Each series and graphic novel features unique artists and styles, but they all maintain a consistent visual feel. This strong art really enhances the world-building and ensures each comic feels distinct from the show, rather than just a copy. The combination of great writing and art elevates these comics beyond typical tie-in material, giving them a life of their own. Considering how popular Stranger Things still is, the comics are likely to continue for some time. With more stories planned – like Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 – and the main series’ ending yet to be revealed, there’s plenty more for fans to enjoy, and the comics will be there to provide it.
