Chris Evans is a versatile actor who’s proven he can excel in many different kinds of movies. He’s best known for playing Captain America in the Marvel films, but he’s also delivered strong performances in mysteries like Knives Out, action movies like The Gray Man, and even voiced a character in the animated film Lightyear. However, his science fiction work hasn’t gotten as much attention, and now one of his older sci-fi films is leaving the streaming service Tubi.
Okay, so Tubi is losing a really solid sci-fi flick this month: Danny Boyle’s Sunshine. Written by Alex Garland, it’s got a fantastic cast – Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh… the list goes on! The premise is pretty high-stakes: a team heads to the sun on a desperate mission to, well, reignite it before Earth freezes over. It wasn’t a blockbuster when it came out, but critics really appreciated it. Honestly, with almost 20 years under its belt, it holds up beautifully. And if you loved Project Hail Mary, you absolutely need to catch this before it disappears from Tubi.
Sunshine Feels Almost Like a Sequel to Project Hail Mary (Though The Films Are Not Connected)

If the premise of Sunshine reminded you of Project Hail Mary, you’re right to notice the similarities. Set in 2057, Sunshine depicts a dying sun and a freezing Earth. To save humanity, eight astronauts are sent on a desperate mission aboard the starship Icarus II to reignite the sun with a powerful bomb. While the cause of the sun’s decline isn’t explained, the story complements Project Hail Mary well. That film reveals the sun is dimming due to an organism called astrophage, with a catastrophic outcome predicted within roughly 30 years – a timeline that aligns with the beginning of Sunshine.
Though Project Hail Mary centers on a mission to stop a sun-killing threat and save Earth, the movie only shows that the mission succeeded and Earth was beginning to cool down. We don’t see how humanity used the solution discovered by Grace and Rocky, but it’s easy to picture a scenario similar to the one in the film Sunshine. Watching both movies together creates a satisfying, unofficial continuation of the story – until a Project Hail Mary sequel is made. While a sequel isn’t currently planned, fans are hopeful for more adventures with Grace and Rocky. For now, Sunshine will have to suffice.
Sunshine is streaming on Tubi through the end of April.
