The First 10 Members of the Modern-Day Guardians of the Galaxy, Ranked by Power

The Guardians of the Galaxy first appeared in Marvel Comics in the 1970s, but the team we see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is much newer. They didn’t officially team up until 2008 in the comic series Annihilation: Conquest. This version of the Guardians quickly became popular and got their own comic book, Guardians of the Galaxy (Vol. 2), which launched in May 2008. Star-Lord and Nova were instrumental in bringing the team together, and the original lineup actually included all five of the MCU’s core members, plus a few unexpected heroes.

Here’s a ranking of the first ten Guardians of the Galaxy, from weakest to strongest.

10) Rocket Raccoon

Rocket Raccoon was an early member of Star-Lord’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Interestingly, he first appeared in a 1982 issue of The Incredible Hulk long before the team was formed. Star-Lord recruited Rocket and Groot after freeing them from prison, initially intending to send them on a dangerous, likely fatal, mission – which they surprisingly survived. Rocket is a highly skilled fighter, strategist, and marksman, though he doesn’t have any superpowers. He’s essentially a raccoon with a talent for demolitions. Still, his natural toughness makes him a formidable opponent in a fight.

9) Mantis

The Guardians of the Galaxy didn’t become a team until after the Annihilation: Conquest war. Star-Lord believed they should work together to prevent future conflicts, but he knew the team members didn’t particularly like each other. He asked Mantis to use her telepathic abilities to subtly influence their emotions and create a sense of camaraderie. While not a fighter, Mantis can read and manipulate feelings, and she even has some limited ability to foresee the future, making her a valuable support member for the Guardians.

8) Star-Lord

Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord, created the Guardians of the Galaxy following the Annihilation: Conquest storyline. This version of Star-Lord is a skilled military leader and strategist, comparable to Nova in terms of leadership and wartime expertise, unlike the Star-Lord seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He briefly gained immense power, becoming the Master of the Sun with almost god-like abilities, making him the strongest Guardian. Though he lost these powers when the Element Gun was destroyed, he remains a capable leader with extended lifespan and regenerative abilities, demonstrated by his ability to regrow an eye.

7) Gamora

Gamora first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1975, in Strange Tales #180. She played a significant role in the Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest storylines. Initially, she was an enemy of Star-Lord, but she discovered she was being manipulated by the Phalanx. She then joined forces with Nova and other heroes to protect the universe. After the war, Gamora decided to become a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. While not possessing typical superpowers, she’s much stronger and more agile than Star-Lord, and she’s a highly skilled martial artist and assassin.

6) Groot

When the events of Annihilation: Conquest began, Groot was in prison alongside Rocket Raccoon. This was how they first met, though Rocket initially couldn’t understand Groot until he helped him escape the brutal prison guards. This encounter brought them to the attention of Star-Lord, who recruited them for a dangerous mission that ultimately led to their freedom and the formation of the new Guardians of the Galaxy. While Rocket is clever, Groot possesses incredible power, including the ability to regenerate from any injury, even death, and to grow or shrink in size. He’s also exceptionally strong and can manipulate plants with his mind.

5) Drax the Destroyer

Drax the Destroyer first appeared in 1972 in Iron Man #55. Initially, his only goal was to kill Thanos, as Thanos had murdered his family, Arthur and his wife. Arthur’s spirit was then placed inside the Destroyer body with a single purpose: revenge. Later, during the Annihilation: Conquest storyline, Drax and Gamora were briefly controlled by the Phalanx, becoming villains before regaining control and ultimately helping to win the war. Drax then became a team member, though he often kept to himself. Drax possesses incredible strength and durability as the Avatar of Life, with an artificial body that can quickly heal from injuries.

4) Agent Venom

During the Marvel NOW! era of the Guardians of the Galaxy comics, Flash Thompson, as Agent Venom, became a member of the team. The Avengers sent him to act as their representative and maintain a connection with the Guardians after they’d worked together. Flash, like anyone bonded with the Venom symbiote, had amazing abilities, and he uniquely used it to form weapons like guns. Eventually, the symbiote broke free from Flash and briefly possessed Groot and Drax before traveling to the symbiote home world, where Venom received a cure for his mental instability and grew even stronger as a hero.

3) Moondragon

Moondragon is the daughter of Arthur Douglas, also known as Drax, and she was a child survivor of Thanos’s attack. She grew up on Titan, where she received rigorous training and developed incredible psychic abilities and mental control. Moondragon participated in both Annihilation Wars, but was killed by Ultron during Annihilation: Conquest. The Guardians of the Galaxy managed to bring her back to life through a complex process involving the sacrifice of Drax and Phyla-Vell, successfully rescuing her soul. Following what appeared to be Phyla’s death, Moondragon became a full-fledged field agent with the Guardians. Her psychic powers are nearly unmatched, exceeding even those of Professor X in both range and strength – she can reach as far as he can, but doesn’t need Cerebro to do so.

2) Phyla-Vell

Phyla-Vell has been known by several names, including Captain Marvel and Quasar, and even Martyr. She first wielded the powerful Quantum Bands during the Annihilation Wave, becoming Quasar, and later played a key role in awakening Adam Warlock during the Annihilation: Conquest event. Phyla-Vell was crucial in the final battle against Ultron, helping to win the war and earning her a place as one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy. She possessed incredible abilities, including superhuman strength, cosmic awareness, and mastery of the Quantum Bands. Ultimately, she sacrificed herself to save Moondragon from Hell, becoming the Avatar of Death and falling in battle against a furious Thanos.

1) Adam Warlock

Adam Warlock is by far the strongest member of the new Guardians of the Galaxy team. He was developing in a special cocoon when a massive conflict called Annihilation: Conquest started. Moondragon and Phyla-Vell woke him up prematurely, leaving him younger and more unpredictable than he should have been. Despite this, it was Warlock who ultimately defeated Ultron during that event. As one of the original Guardians, Warlock possesses incredible abilities, linked to the powerful Soul Gem. Even Thanos acknowledges that few beings in the universe are his equal. Warlock is superhumanly strong, effectively immortal, has a deep understanding of the cosmos, can read minds and see the future, control energy, and wield both quantum magic and cosmic power.
