007 First Light – Amazon Says “It’s Still Too Early to Discuss Future Projects”

After Amazon Games’ general manager, Jeff Gatis, hinted that IO Interactive might not publish a sequel to 007 First Light themselves, Amazon has provided further details. In a statement to VideoGamesChronicle, the company explained that it’s currently too early to talk about a potential 007 First Light sequel.

Amazon highlighted its successful collaboration with IO Interactive and hinted at further updates and plans for the game coming soon.

So, Amazon now owns the rights to make future James Bond games, which is awesome! But they’re not ready to talk about what those games might be just yet. They said they’re really happy with how things are going with IO Interactive – the team making the upcoming 007 First Light – and we’ll get more details on that game soon. Basically, they’re keeping everything close to the chest for now, but they’re excited about what’s coming next!

Earlier this week, Gattis explained that Amazon didn’t completely own the rights to the First Light James Bond game. He believes any follow-up game would likely be made by MGM, and potentially by Amazon Game Studios as well.

We weren’t involved in creating 007 First Light, he explained. Although we now own the intellectual property for it, we acquired that ownership after the initial deal for First Light was already completed.

Gattis explained that Amazon’s increased focus on protecting its intellectual property stems from a desire to build broader narratives beyond video games. He used Tomb Raider as an illustration, noting that Amazon aims to create new TV series and movies to reach a wider audience, building on the success of its game releases.

We’re noticing that video, movies, and video games are increasingly blending together, making the distinctions between them less clear. We see this as a great chance to develop original content based on our TV shows and movies. For example, a ‘Tomb Raider’ TV series will be available on Prime Video alongside the existing games, and we have several new games in development that will connect to content from Prime Video.

“This is where we’ve kind of made some bets on first-party content.”

The game 007 First Light came out last week on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. A version for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is also planned for release this summer. According to studio CEO Hakan Abrak, the game is already playable on the Switch 2, and the team is working to ensure it runs smoothly.

He confirmed the game is being developed for the Switch 2. The team wants to deliver the best possible experience and needs a little more time to polish it. While they originally aimed for a summer release, it’s now likely to come out later in the summer, but they are committed to launching it.
