007 First Light Developer Might Not Get to Self-Publish Potential Sequel

The positive reception to 007 First Light has sparked new interest in the James Bond video game franchise. However, IO Interactive likely won’t be handling the publishing of any future installments. Jeff Gattis, head of Amazon’s gaming division, recently discussed plans for the series in an interview with Polygon.

Okay, so here’s the deal with the potential for more James Bond games. Apparently, IO Interactive had already made a deal to adapt the franchise with MGM before Amazon bought them out. Now that Amazon owns MGM, they’re in a position to benefit from Bond’s success, so it makes sense they’d want to publish any sequels themselves. Basically, they’ve got a vested interest in keeping the Bond franchise going strong!

According to Gattis, Amazon didn’t completely own the rights to the first James Bond game, First Light. He explained that any future Bond games will be developed by MGM, and potentially also by Amazon Game Studios.

Gattis clarified that their company didn’t create the 007 game First Light. While they now own the rights to the game, they acquired those rights after the initial deal for First Light was already completed.

Amazon is increasingly focused on protecting its intellectual property because its future strategy heavily relies on expanding into video, movies, and video games. A key part of this plan is creating new content based on well-known franchises, as illustrated by their interest in adapting titles like Tomb Raider.

We’re seeing video, movies, and video games increasingly blend together, making the boundaries between them less clear. We believe this creates a great chance for us to develop original content based on our TV shows and movies. For example, a Tomb Raider TV series will be available on Prime Video alongside the existing games, and we’re working on new games inspired by Prime Video content.

“This is where we’ve kind of made some bets on first-party content.”

IO Interactive’s new game, 007 First Light, launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S last week and has quickly become a hit. The company announced on social media that the game sold 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours. Since the release was right before the weekend, sales numbers have probably increased significantly since then.

It’s no surprise this game is doing well. We loved it, giving it a 9/10 in our review! It offers a fresh take on the classic James Bond character, features fantastic level design, and looks amazing. Our only issues were a few frustrating quick-time events and occasionally simple enemy AI.

Other publications also loved 007 First Light, and IO Interactive has shared a trailer highlighting all the positive reviews the game has received.

007 First Light tells the story of how James Bond became an MI6 agent, showing his initial recruitment and training. The game features an exciting international plot, with action taking place in diverse locations like a beautiful resort in Vietnam, a ship graveyard in Mauritania, and a lavish hotel built from a castle in Slovakia.

A Nintendo Switch 2 version of 007 First Light is planned for release later in the summer.
