007: First Light Studio Had to Discuss “Weird Things” Like Which Colored Cars Bond Wouldn’t Drive

IO Interactive is sharing more information about their new James Bond game, 007: First Light, which comes out on May 27th. The studio recently revealed they spent a lot of time deciding on the colors of Bond’s famous cars. In an interview with PCGamer, Rasmus Poulsen, the art director for the franchise, discussed the challenges of accurately portraying James Bond, given the license is held by Amazon.

According to Poulsen, the idea for 007: First Light to focus on a young James Bond was present from the very beginning. Having this core concept established made subsequent discussions with Amazon much smoother. He explained, “We always intended to portray a younger Bond,” and emphasized the extensive research done to ensure accuracy, stating, “When you have that solid foundation, the conversations become a lot easier.”

Poulsen pointed out that surprisingly trivial topics, like the color of James Bond’s car, often sparked lengthy debates. He described how people would passionately discuss what car Bond would never drive, calling these conversations “weird” but also admitting they could be enjoyable and lead to unexpected, multi-meeting discussions. Ironically, these minor details received far more attention than major decisions, which were usually made quickly.

Poulsen also stated James Bond would never drive a white car. Ultimately, it depends on how you interpret the character, and details like if the car is leased or a rental.

Patrick Gibson is playing James Bond in the new game, 007: First Light. Lennie James, who voices Bond’s mentor in the game, praised Gibson’s performance, suggesting he’s talented enough to play Bond in a future movie.

James believes the actor is excellent as Bond in their project and thinks he’s a strong contender for the official James Bond role. He’s confident the casting directors are at least considering him, and feels it would be a mistake not to.

IO Interactive recently announced that it will likely take most players around 20 hours to complete a full playthrough of 007: First Light. Considering their Hitman games are known for being highly replayable, and First Light will include some open-ended sandbox levels, players can expect plenty of reasons to revisit the game after finishing the main story. This 20-hour estimate doesn’t include the Tac Sim mode, which will provide even more ways to experience the missions and scenarios within the game.

The game 007: First Light will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 release has been delayed and is now expected sometime this summer.
