I’ve been playing card games for ages, ever since Magic: The Gathering really kicked things off back in ’93. It wasn’t long before these games showed up on our computers and consoles, and now you can find card battling in tons of awesome titles. The genre keeps delivering, so I decided to check out what everyone’s actually playing and put together a top 10 list. I based the ranking on what critics thought when the games first came out, how fun they are to play, and how popular they are with players like me. Honestly, one of these games ended up ranking a little differently than I thought it would, but after looking at all the data, here’s how they shake out.
10) Cross Blitz

Released in 2025, Cross Blitz is a game that blends the strategy of collectible card games with the progression of role-playing games. Players can enjoy both solo and multiplayer campaigns, plus a roguelite mode for unique deck-building experiences. While it shares similarities with other card battle games, Cross Blitz stands out with its appealing and fun world. After a two-year Early Access period, the game received positive reviews and has consistently maintained high scores. Currently available on PC, the developers continue to add new content and improvements, with over 400 unique cards available as of now.
9) Inscryption

I absolutely love Inscryption! It’s a card-battling game, but it’s not like anything I’ve ever played. It came out in 2021 and you can find it on basically any console or computer – PC, Mac, Linux, you name it. The whole thing is set in this creepy cabin where you’re forced to play a card game by this mysterious gamemaster. It’s a really cool mix of different game types, making it super unique. And it’s been a huge hit – over a million copies sold in under a year! The developers are still adding to it too, with a free expansion and lots of updates, which is awesome.
8) Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales

CD Projekt Red’s popular Witcher series includes a card game called Gwent. In 2018, they released Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, a standalone game that plays like a single-player version of Gwent. While it’s also a role-playing game with a full story campaign, gameplay centers around card battles. Despite positive reviews praising its quality, Thronebreaker didn’t sell very well. It’s still a mystery why, as the game is well-made, fun, and a good fit for the Witcher universe.
7) Shogun Showdown

Unlike most card battle games, Shogun Showdown uses tiles that players collect as they play. These tiles represent attacks and actions they can use during their turn. The game combines turn-based strategy with roguelike elements, meaning players progress in a unique way each time they play. The goal is to defeat the shogun and save the world from an army of warriors across Japan. Shogun Showdown was very well-received when it launched, earning positive reviews from both critics and players.
6) Hearthstone

Blizzard Entertainment launched Hearthstone in 2014, initially calling it Heroes of Warcraft. The game draws heavily from the rich history of the Warcraft universe, incorporating familiar characters and items into its gameplay and card designs. Blizzard has consistently added new content through expansions, keeping the game fresh and engaging. Despite being one of the most popular and successful digital card games—with over 100 million players at its peak—Hearthstone actually ranked lower than many other games discussed in this article.
5) SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters’ Clash

In the late 1990s, video game companies SNK and Capcom collaborated to create SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters’ Clash for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. The game has a classic pixel art style and is played like collectible card games such as Magic: The Gathering. Despite the Neo Geo Pocket Color not being a mainstream console, Card Fighters’ Clash was very well-received by both critics and players. It spawned a short-lived but popular series of games, with the final installment released on the Nintendo DS.
4) Slay the Spire

Released in 2019, Slay the Spire quickly became a popular and critically acclaimed game that combines roguelike elements with deck-building strategy. Players choose from four characters and climb a spire, battling enemies along the way. You’ll collect items and upgrades that customize your deck, ensuring each attempt feels fresh and different. The game’s success led to Slay the Spire 2, which launched in Early Access in March 2026 and promises to be another top-tier card battle experience.
3) Monster Train 2

I first got into Monster Train when it came out on PC in 2020, and I was so glad it quickly came to the Switch! The whole idea is you’re defending a pyre on a four-floor train from waves of enemies by building a deck and summoning monsters to fight for you. Then, in May 2025, Monster Train 2 dropped! It’s pretty similar to the first game, which I loved, but it’s even better. Critics and players really seemed to agree – it’s gotten amazing reviews, and I think it’s because they added a ton of cool improvements and made the gameplay even more polished.
2) Balatro

Released in 2024, Balatro is a wildly popular roguelike deck-building game available on almost every platform. Players use a standard deck of cards to score points by making poker hands and defeating the ‘Blinds.’ The game quickly earned widespread critical praise and sold millions of copies, winning many awards. Balatro‘s innovative gameplay hasn’t stopped a thriving modding community from adding even more content, and it’s built a large and devoted fanbase.
1) I Was a Teenage Exocolonist

Critics overwhelmingly agree that the best card battle game is I Was a Teenage Exocolonist from 2022. It’s a unique blend of different game types – RPG, visual novel, and card battles – where card games are used both within the story and to improve your character’s abilities. It’s a multi-genre experience with a really strong card system and a captivating story. OpenCritic gives it a perfect 100% score, which is quite unusual. While I personally enjoy Hearthstone more, the rankings were definitive, so I have to acknowledge I Was a Teenage Exocolonist as the top pick.
Hey everyone, I’m always looking for new card battle games to try! What are some of your favorites? Let’s chat about them over on the ComicBook Forum – come share your recommendations!
