Even the most beloved games have moments that don’t quite work – sections that feel forced, slow down the fun, or are just plain annoying. These parts can really hurt an otherwise great experience with strange design choices. This list highlights 15 fantastic games that still frustrated players with unwelcome mandatory sections, whether it was awkward driving, frustrating stealth, or sudden difficulty jumps, despite being otherwise iconic adventures.
Mass Effect 1 – Mako Segments
The original Mass Effect started what became a hugely popular sci-fi RPG series, but even fans admit the sections where you drive the Mako vehicle are the weakest part of the game. While exploring alien planets in a six-wheeled tank sounds exciting, it quickly becomes frustrating. The Mako is difficult to control, bouncing and sliding around even on small hills. The planets themselves are often empty and repetitive, and the enemy encounters aren’t particularly interesting. These Mako sections appear frequently, and it becomes clear they were overly ambitious and not fully developed. They disrupt the story, slow down the game, and make players wish they could skip them altogether.
