Throughout the history of movies, Hollywood has seen its share of unsuccessful films – even some that are now considered holiday favorites, like It’s a Wonderful Life, and others that initially won awards, such as One Battle After Another. Usually, these failures are best left in the past. However, occasionally a film will gain a dedicated following and become a cult classic, and sometimes even find major success through home video and streaming.
Beyond simply doing well in theaters, many directors hope their films will become beloved cult classics. These movies stand the test of time and are enjoyable regardless of how much money they made or what critics thought. From unique science fiction films to thrilling masterpieces, they’re essential viewing for any movie fan.
Gattaca Is a Beautiful Exploration of Fate
Vincent is a man born naturally – meaning without genetic engineering – in a future where those born this way face prejudice. Determined to achieve his dream of going to space, he uses a stolen identity to get a job at the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation. However, when his boss is murdered just before a crucial launch, Vincent finds himself a suspect and must prove his innocence while also hiding his true identity.
Despite having a brilliant script and a strong cast, the sci-fi film Gattaca mainly resonated with dedicated fans of the genre. Some found its pace too slow and its themes too complex, but the film uses the character of Vincent to thoughtfully examine themes of destiny, luck, and taking control of your own life when facing unfairness. Each scene is expertly crafted, focusing on character development and realistic dialogue, and its believability makes the story even more impactful.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm Is One of DC’s Greatest Movies
I was so hyped after Batman: The Animated Series, and DC followed it up with what everyone now considers the best superhero movie of the ’90s! It’s a really cool story – Bruce Wayne reconnects with an old flame, Andrea Beaumont, right when someone starts taking out all the big crime bosses in Gotham. It throws Bruce for a loop, making him question things, and of course, he has to deal with the terrifying Joker. It’s a fantastic movie!
Released in 1993, Mask of the Phantasm was a rare, traditionally animated superhero movie hitting theaters – one of very few in the last forty years. Despite being a high-quality film, it didn’t do well in cinemas, largely due to a weak marketing push, and because animated superhero content wasn’t widely accepted for adult audiences at the time. However, it found huge success on home video and is now considered a classic.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show Pays Homage to B-Cinema Beautifully
The story begins with Brad and Janet stumbling upon the castle of the unusual scientist, Frank-N-Furter. They arrive at just the right – or wrong – moment to see his new creation, the perfect man named Rocky, come to life. What follows is a wild night filled with music, dancing, and bizarre, frightening events.
The success of The Rocky Horror Picture Show wasn’t accidental, but carefully crafted. After a disappointing start in theaters, the film found new life with late-night screenings. It quickly evolved from just another musical or low-budget film into a cultural icon representing rebellion, alternative lifestyles, and a vibrant nightlife. It unexpectedly became a lasting favorite within the LGBT community, too.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Needs a Bigger American Audience
I first really noticed Guy Ritchie with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels – it’s the film that made him famous! It’s about these four friends who get into serious trouble when they owe a huge amount of money – £500,000 – to a really dangerous gangster in London. Knowing they can’t possibly earn that much legally, they come up with a crazy plan to rob a group of other criminals, hoping to use the stolen money to pay off their debt before the gangster finds them.
I honestly think Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is a movie more people in America need to discover. It’s such a great look into the London crime scene of the 90s, and the writing is seriously clever – some of Guy Ritchie’s best, in my opinion. Plus, it’s the movie that really launched Jason Statham’s career, and I think anyone who checks it out will be glad they did.
Reservoir Dogs Made Quentin Tarantino a Household Name
I remember when I first saw Reservoir Dogs – it was incredible to think it was Quentin Tarantino’s very first film! The whole movie centers around these criminals trying to piece together why their heist went so wrong. They end up holed up in a warehouse, trying to figure out who betrayed them, split the money, and basically just survive with the police closing in. It’s a really tense and clever story.
Though Reservoir Dogs didn’t make much money initially—only $2.9 million—it became a cult hit on home video and helped launch Quentin Tarantino’s career. It’s now considered a classic thriller and a cornerstone of 1990s crime cinema. While it remains less popular than later films like Kill Bill and Django Unchained, Reservoir Dogs has rightfully earned its place in pop culture.
The Royal Tenenbaums Is Wes Anderson at His Finest
The Royal Tenenbaums tells the story of the Tenenbaum family, a group of uniquely flawed siblings raised by their mother after their parents’ divorce. Years later, when the adult children are each facing their own challenges, their estranged father announces he has cancer. He attempts to reconnect with them during what he claims are his final days, forcing everyone to confront their complicated family history and personal struggles.
While some might not immediately connect with its unique humor, The Royal Tenenbaums is a delightful and quirky film that’s hard not to enjoy. Though it occasionally veers into the bizarre, this 2002 movie is remarkably well-made, offering both visual appeal and genuine heart. It features a cast of lovable, if somewhat strange, characters who make this family dramedy surprisingly relatable.
The Thing Was Helpless Against E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
John Carpenter’s 1982 film, The Thing, is often considered one of the best horror movies ever made. It’s a reimagining of the 1951 film The Thing From Another World, and tells the story of a research team in Antarctica who find a lifeform that can change its shape. As the creature starts taking over the crew, the remaining survivors become increasingly paranoid, unable to determine who is still human and who is not.
Looking back, it’s clear the movie suffered from being released at the same time as Steven Spielberg’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. When audiences were captivated by that heartwarming alien story, they weren’t interested in a violent horror film. Despite initially failing, many now consider the director’s 1982 movie to be a groundbreaking classic in its genre.
The Big Lebowski Spins Hardboiled Detective Fiction Into a Comedy Classic
The Coen brothers were already known for their unique and beloved films, but they cemented their status as filmmaking legends with The Big Lebowski. The movie centers around Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, a laid-back man in Los Angeles, and his simple quest to get a new rug. It playfully reimagines classic detective stories as a modern, funny adventure. As the Dude searches for a replacement, he meets a series of quirky and unforgettable characters in the city’s underbelly.
When The Big Lebowski was first released, it didn’t do well with American audiences, much like other films that later became cult hits. It found more success in Europe, but initially, many viewers weren’t prepared for its unique style, and it didn’t appeal to mainstream tastes. Over time, though, the film has become a beloved classic, now considered a defining example of comedy neo-Noir.
Blade Runner Used Science Fiction to Create a Neo-Noir Masterpiece
As a film buff, I’ve always been captivated by Blade Runner. It throws you into a really bleak future – a 2019 Los Angeles where pollution has destroyed nature and a powerful company, Tyrell, has created these incredibly realistic artificial people called Replicants. These Replicants were originally used as workers in off-world colonies, but a group of them come to Earth looking for a way to live longer. The film follows Rick Deckard, an ex-bounty hunter, who’s brought out of retirement to track them down and, well, eliminate them.
In the 1980s, audiences generally preferred big, mainstream adventures, making it difficult for darker or more unusual films to find success. Ridley Scott’s science fiction noir didn’t initially reach a wide audience, but as the director released updated versions and Harrison Ford became a major star, the film gained the recognition it deserved. Many now consider it a landmark science fiction movie, and its pacing is consistently strong throughout.
Sorcerer Is a Simply Flawless Piece of Suspense Cinema
William Friedkin’s 1977 adventure-thriller, Sorcerer, didn’t do well in theaters because it came out at the same time as Star Wars. While George Lucas’ film became a huge hit, Sorcerer—based on the novel The Wages of Fear—lost money. The film follows four criminals who seek shelter in a small town in Central America. They get a dangerous job offer: drive two trucks loaded with explosives through a treacherous jungle in exchange for new identities.
It’s especially disappointing that Sorcerer failed financially, considering the incredible effort put in by everyone involved. The film features impressive practical stunts, was shot on location in extremely difficult conditions, and creates a truly gripping atmosphere. It’s a well-crafted adventure that understands and excels within its genre – a classic dark jungle film that any movie enthusiast should experience.
