The long-awaited reunion is finally happening! The show, a comedic take on superheroes from the creator of Supernatural, Eric Kripke, brings back stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins.
Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins, known for their work on Supernatural, are now collaborating on The Boys. Ackles, who plays Soldier Boy and is also developing a Vought Rising spin-off, shared how enjoyable it was to work with his former co-stars on a new project. He believes their history on Supernatural allowed them to easily transition into playing such distinct roles together.
Supernatural Helped Jensen Ackles Experiment With Different Characters
Jensen Ackles’ portrayal of Soldier Boy walks a fine line between good and bad, unlike his character Dean Winchester, who was consistently heroic and willing to make sacrifices. Similarly, Jared Padalecki’s Marathon Man and Jack Quaid’s Malchemical are distinct from his previous role as Sam Winchester, and Collins’ Malchemical differs from his character Castiel.
Honestly, stepping onto set with those guys just felt right. It was instantly comfortable and familiar, which was great. It was a little strange being in a completely new setting with different costumes, of course. But the adjustment wasn’t about getting used to each other – we already knew each other so well! It was more about shifting our mindset to play these new roles, instead of just falling back into our usual playful back-and-forth. But hey, we’re professionals, and we figured it out. We always do.
Jared Padalecki talked about how his previous role prepared him to play different characters. During the 15 seasons of Supernatural, he portrayed Dean Winchester, but also took on many other roles, including variations like Demon Dean and when possessed by Michael.
Both Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins portrayed multiple versions of their characters – Padalecki as different iterations of Sam, like Lucifer Sam and a Sam without a soul, and Collins as the human form of Castiel, Jimmy Novak. Jensen Ackles explained that after working with both actors for 15 years, he felt comfortable enough to explore these different character dynamics, allowing them to play off each other even while portraying alternate versions of themselves.
I focused on staying true to the character, and the costume really helped me get into that mindset. Once I put it on, it felt like there was no other way I could play the role, which made the performance really enjoyable.
He pointed out that he, Jared, and Misha had all played variations of their own characters on Supernatural for fifteen years. Sometimes he’d be possessed, Jared might lack a soul, or Jared would even play Lucifer. Because of this, they were already comfortable portraying different sides of themselves and interacting as different characters. So, it wasn’t a huge leap to pretend to be someone else entirely. As soon as filming stopped, though, they’d fall back into their usual playful teasing.
Jensen Ackles’ The Boys Journey Continues
Despite a limited schedule for his co-stars, Jensen Ackles will continue appearing in The Boys. He’s set to be involved until the season finale on May 20th, barring any unexpected plot twists for his character, Soldier Boy. However, his involvement with The Boys universe is already confirmed beyond this season.
Jared Padalecki will reprise his role as Soldier Boy in a new prequel series to ‘The Boys.’ The show will explore the origins of Soldier Boy’s character and reveal how Vought International created the superheroes. This series is expected to be more successful than other ‘Boys’ spin-offs, as it focuses on a popular character and the history of the world within the show.
The Boys releases new episodes every Wednesday on Prime Video.
