Over ten years ago, the death of a popular character on a TV show began the decline of a long-running program on ABC. While characters often die on shows like those featuring police, firefighters, or doctors, it’s unusual for a main character to be killed off. Shows typically keep their core group of actors for many seasons to create a sense of familiarity and comfort for viewers. However, some shows are more willing than others to eliminate regular characters.
Over its twenty seasons, Grey’s Anatomy has become a television staple, known for its many dramatic storylines and character deaths. Created by Shonda Rhimes, the medical drama still attracts a dedicated audience. However, many fans feel the show was at its best in its early years, when the original group of interns were just beginning their careers and the central focus was the romance between Meredith and Derek. That’s why it was such a surprise when Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey, was killed off in season eleven.
On April 23, 2015, ABC broadcast the 21st episode of season 11 of Grey’s Anatomy, titled “How to Save a Life.” This episode featured Derek’s last regular appearance on the show. In it, Meredith’s husband was helping people injured in a car crash he almost became a victim of. Sadly, while ensuring the injured were cared for, he was hit by a truck, resulting in a coma and ultimately, his death.
How Derek’s Death Started The Slow Death Of Grey’s Anatomy

It’s amazing to me that over ten years after Derek’s death, Grey’s Anatomy is still on TV! ABC has even picked it up for a 23rd season, which is incredible. So many doctors have come and gone at Grey Sloan since then, and even Meredith has found happiness with Nick. Honestly, it’s really impressive how the show has kept going after losing such a huge character. But let’s be real, the earlier seasons were just something special, and it’s hard to say the newer ones quite live up to that magic.
Beyond the show’s falling viewership – which is understandable given how the entertainment landscape has changed – Derek’s death truly felt like the end of a chapter for the medical drama. The original cast had a special chemistry that later seasons struggled to replicate. Although the show had seen actors leave before, losing Derek not only impacted the story immediately, but also significantly changed its direction, as his relationship with Meredith was always the show’s heart. His death was permanent and a huge loss for viewers.
Dempsey reappeared in season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy as part of Meredith’s dream while she was close to death. Since his character was already killed off, the show had to find a unique way to bring him back. While the series can continue to feature him in the future, it won’t be a full-time return.
Grey’s Anatomy season 22 airs on ABC, and the complete series is available to stream on Hulu.
