Two classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) games from 1987 and 1988 are now available on today’s gaming systems. Publisher Hamster has been reviving beloved retro titles for several years through its “Arcade Archives” and “Console Archives” series. They’ve re-released many games originally on Nintendo, Sega, and PlayStation – including some that were only released in Japan. Now, Hamster is continuing this trend with these two iconic NES titles.
I’m so hyped! Hamster is bringing two classic games to Switch and PlayStation on May 7th: Arkanoid and MagMax. Honestly, Arkanoid is the one I’m really excited about. It was a huge hit in arcades back in 1986 – that brick-breaking gameplay is just iconic! Then it came to the NES in ’87 and blew up even more here in North America. It’s definitely one of the most loved brick-breaker games of all time, and it’s awesome to see it getting a release on modern consoles. I can’t wait to play it again!
Originally released in arcades in 1985, MagMax is a side-scrolling shooter that came to Japan’s NES in 1986. It didn’t reach the U.S. on the Nintendo console until 1988. While largely forgotten over the years, this new re-release is a welcome opportunity for fans to easily revisit this classic, as it hasn’t been widely available until now.
Both Arkanoid and MagMax are coming to digital stores on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. Arkanoid is part of the “Arcade Archives” series and will also be available on PS4. MagMax joins the “Console Archives” lineup and will be on Switch 2. Both games have been updated with features like online leaderboards, the ability to rewind gameplay, and new save options. The PS5 and Switch 2 versions of Arkanoid will also include a brand new game mode that wasn’t in the original.
You can find trailers and more information about the new releases of Arkanoid and MagMax from Hamster below.
Arkanoid
Pilot the spacecraft ‘VAUS’ and use an Energy Ball to break through Space Walls. Navigate a twisted labyrinth to escape and return to your mothership, ‘ARKANOID.’ Collect power-ups along the way to help you beat each level!
MagMax
Okay, so I just discovered this game called MagMax, and it sounds awesome! You get to control this transforming robot, the MAGMAX, and you’re basically humanity’s last hope against this evil alien computer called Babylon. The coolest part? You can travel between the surface and underground levels using warp holes, blasting enemies with energy beams along the way. It’s a shooter, and I can’t wait to try it!
