Steam has seen a lot of exciting new games lately, which has changed up the top-selling charts. While games like Windrose and Far, Far West are still popular, and Conan Exiles recently returned with an updated version, Conan Exiles Enhanced, they’ve all been overshadowed by today’s major new release.
The rhythm-action game Dead as Disco was released in Early Access on May 5th, and it’s already a hit! Many fans were excited about this unique blend of beat ’em up and rhythm gameplay, but it was unclear how that excitement would affect sales. Surprisingly, Dead as Disco is currently the top-selling paid game on Steam, only surpassed by free-to-play games, and players are enjoying it based on early reviews.
Dead as Disco Tops Steam Charts After Launching in Early Access
Dead as Disco is an action game that blends fighting with rhythm, inspired by music videos and martial arts films. Players take on the role of a former star trying to make a comeback. Developed by Brain Jar Games, it features vibrant neon graphics and fast-paced 3D brawling where combat moves are synchronized to the music, creating a dynamic, music-video-like experience.
Currently in Early Access, Dead as Disco lets players experience a preview of the full game by fighting 7 of its boss characters and tackling a variety of challenges. The full game will launch with over 25 songs for players to customize their battles, and even allows you to add your own music. It’s clear many players were eager to jump into this new indie beat ’em up, even before the game is fully finished!
Released on May 5th at 10 AM, Dead as Disco quickly became popular on Steam, reaching the #3 spot on the weekly bestseller list. The game has peaked at almost 8,500 concurrent players, which is a great launch for an independent game still in early development. While strong sales and player numbers suggest interest, they don’t always guarantee a good game. Fortunately, Dead as Disco seems to be delivering on its potential so far.

Just a day into its Early Access release, Dead as Disco has received a “Very Positive” rating from over 1,000 players. Reviewers are enjoying the game’s engaging rhythm-based combat and noting significant improvements over the original demo. The developers at Brain Jar Games have a clear plan for the future, including more boss battles, arenas, and music, as well as a co-op multiplayer mode. They are currently aiming for a full 1.0 release in 2027, and will continue to refine the game based on player feedback.
You can get Dead as Disco on Steam for $24.99 as an Early Access title. There’s currently a 20% discount available, but it ends on May 19th.
