As a huge fan of zombie flicks and shows, I have to say that the 2020 Netflix series from South Korea really stood out. What made it so good, in my opinion, was that it didn’t just rehash the same old zombie story we’ve seen a million times. Ever since The Walking Dead blew up in 2010, zombie shows have been everywhere. We’ve had some hits – I enjoyed Z Nation and Black Summer – and a lot of misses, like Netflix’s Resident Evil adaptation or that Zombieland TV show that didn’t quite land. But the undead are pretty much a permanent fixture on TV and streaming now.
While Netflix’s zombie series All of Us Are Dead is a standout in the genre, it’s not the only great zombie story South Korea has produced recently. The thrilling and heartbreaking movie Train to Busan captivated both critics and general audiences back in 2016. And in 2020, Netflix released Sweet Home, a lesser-known but innovative series that put a unique spin on the traditional zombie formula, offering horror fans something truly new.
Sweet Home Helped Redefine The Zombie TV Show Genre
The K-drama Sweet Home begins with a devastating loss for its main character, Cha Hyun-su, who loses his family in a car accident. Things quickly worsen when monstrous creatures attack his rundown apartment building, Green Home. The series then transforms into a terrifying, action-packed horror, reminiscent of films like Evil Dead Rise and Dèmoni 2, and draws comparisons to The Raid as Hyun-su fights for survival against the creatures on each floor of the dangerous building.
But Sweet Home takes a surprising approach to the usual zombie story. It quickly becomes clear that the infected creatures aren’t zombies in the traditional sense. Most zombie tales feature either the recently deceased coming back to life to feed on people, or living individuals transformed into monsters by a disease. This latter style – where infection creates the monsters – is popular in more recent stories like the 28 Days Later films, the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, and the intensely disturbing 2021 Taiwanese horror film, The Sadness.
Sweet Home’s Story Blends Dark Fantasy With Zombie Horror
Unlike many monster stories, the creatures in Sweet Home are born from the deepest desires of each person who transforms, leading to incredibly creative and unique designs. The show takes a surprising turn when the main character discovers the truth behind these transformations at the end of the first season, fundamentally changing the story and its overall feel.
While it’s hard to say exactly what makes it special, Sweet Home isn’t just a typical zombie horror show. It’s a unique mix of dark fantasy and superhero elements, which is what makes it so captivating. Unlike most shows where characters try to avoid monsters, Sweet Home has its characters confront them directly, and this leads to a surprising and fresh direction about halfway through the series.
Sweet Home is a truly unique and darkly humorous zombie series that’s unlike anything you’ve seen before. While its mix of fantasy, horror, gore, and emotional character stories might not appeal to all viewers, it’s a must-see for anyone craving a fresh take on the zombie genre. This three-season Netflix classic is both gruesome and imaginative, with plenty of unexpected twists to surprise even seasoned horror fans.
