Cartoon Network is celebrating the 20th anniversary of a surprising hit – an anime that never officially aired in the US. The channel is known for iconic animated series, and recently, many have returned with new seasons, sequels, or spinoffs. But one show stands out as a particularly unexpected success story.
Toei Animation is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Powerpuff Girls Z. This anime series, which first aired in Japan in July 2026, reimagined The Powerpuff Girls with a fresh take – a new team handled the animation and creative side of things. Powerpuff Girls Z gave the characters different backstories, powers, and a completely new look, making it a unique anime that unfortunately never had an official release in the United States.
What Is Powerpuff Girls Z?
To celebrate Toei Animation’s 50th anniversary in 2000, a collaboration between Cartoon Network, TV Tokyo, Aniplex, and Toei Animation led to the creation of Powerpuff Girls Z. Interestingly, the original creator of The Powerpuff Girls, Craig McCracken, wasn’t involved in the project – a pattern that would repeat with future attempts to revive the series. Instead, Iku Ishiguro directed the show, and Miho Shimogasa, known for her work on Cutie Honey Flash, redesigned the characters for the anime. The result was a very different take on the original series.
Powerpuff Girls Z reimagined the original Cartoon Network series as a unique magical girl anime. Several key changes were made: the story takes place in Tokyo City, Professor Utonium now has a son named Ken, and instead of trying to create the perfect little girl, he’s developing a stronger version of Chemical X called Chemical Z. When a dangerous situation arises, Ken accidentally fires a beam of Chemical Z into an iceberg, sending a chemical ray into the sky. This ray strikes three eighth-grade girls, giving them incredible superpowers and transforming them into superheroes.
Momoko, Miyako, and Kaoru gain superpowers, becoming Hyper Blossom, Rolling Bubbles, and Powered Buttercup. At the same time, a dark version of the Chemical Z ray affects others in town, turning them into new, anime-style versions of classic Powerpuff Girls villains like Mojo Jojo, Fuzzy Lumpkins, and the Gangreen Gang. The show introduces a variety of new villains throughout its 52 episodes. This version is quite different from the original Cartoon Network series, a common issue with other attempts to reboot the franchise.
What Happened to Powerpuff Girls Z?

While Powerpuff Girls Z was popular in Japan and even dubbed in English for countries like the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand, many fans of the original Powerpuff Girls series are unaware of its existence. Despite being connected to the well-known Cartoon Network show, Powerpuff Girls Z has never had a full release in the United States.
It’s still unclear why Cartoon Network never officially released this anime in the United States, and it’s been difficult to find ever since. While the 20th anniversary will offer episodes online, they’ll only be available in Japan. Because there’s never been a good quality release – or even an English dub – the anime has largely been forgotten outside of the few fans who remember seeing it on Cartoon Network years ago.
The original Powerpuff Girls was a standout superhero cartoon on Cartoon Network, so an anime-style spin-off isn’t entirely surprising. However, this version changed so much that it barely resembled the original, which feels inconsistent. Despite that, it remains a funny and memorable part of the franchise. With another reboot on the way, this anime series highlights just how much the core concept of The Powerpuff Girls can be altered before it loses its identity.
