All 11 Types of Xenomorph in the Alien Movies, Ranked by Power

Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, Alien, launched a hugely successful horror and science fiction series by combining the loneliness of space with the unsettling designs of H.R. Giger. The first movie set the stage for a story about a terrifying, biologically engineered creature, focusing on suspense and survival rather than simple action. Over the years, the Alien universe grew far beyond its initial premise, becoming a complex saga that examined the dangers of artificial intelligence and genetic experimentation. This rich thematic core allowed different directors to bring their own unique styles to the films, constantly reinventing the alien creature to mirror our changing fears about technology and its impact.

The Alien franchise is enjoying a huge comeback. The 2024 film Alien: Romulus earned over $350 million worldwide, and a sequel is already in the works. At the same time, the Alien universe has found success on television with Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth, which premiered to record ratings in August 2025. The show is continuing its momentum with a second season planned to shoot in 2026 at Pinewood Studios in London, and the recent addition of Peter Dinklage to the cast has generated even more excitement. While future installments may introduce new variations of the xenomorph, the creature has already appeared in many forms and at different life stages throughout the film series.

11) Chestburster

The xenomorph’s life begins as a Chestburster, a baby-like creature that violently breaks free from its host. Instead of fighting, it immediately tries to escape, hiding in places like spaceship vents or the wreckage of colonies while it quickly grows and develops. Though weak, the Chestburster is surprisingly fast and hard to find, as first seen in the 1979 film. This early stage is the most vulnerable the creature will ever be, but it still poses a threat because of how quickly it can mature.

10) Facehugger

The Facehugger acts as a way for the alien species to reproduce, and is designed to attach to a host and implant an embryo. It emerges from the egg and, while not as strong as a fully grown alien, is surprisingly agile, able to quickly leap and wrap around a victim’s head. It also has acidic blood that makes removing it dangerous, potentially harming both the host and anything nearby. After implanting the embryo, the Facehugger simply falls off and dies, as it isn’t built for fighting.

9) Deacon

The Deacon, a creature that came before the iconic monster in the Alien universe, appeared briefly at the end of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. It was created when an Engineer was attacked by a large Trilobite, resulting in a sleek, blue creature that doesn’t have the mechanical parts or tough outer shell seen in later versions. We only see the Deacon being born, so its full strength and size are unknown, but because it came from the powerful Engineer species, it likely possessed incredible strength and natural hunting skills.

8) Runner

The Runner, also called the Dog Alien, first appeared in Alien 3 and introduced a new idea to the series: DNA reflex. Because a facehugger attached to a four-legged creature, the resulting alien moved on all fours instead of standing upright. This change traded the powerful, two-legged movement of previous aliens for incredible speed and agility. The Runner can move extremely quickly through the corridors of the Fiorina 161 prison, often running on walls and ceilings to surprise its victims. It looks different from typical adult xenomorphs, lacking the tubes on its back and having a smoother outer shell. While very fast and dangerous against those without weapons, the Runner’s lighter build makes it weaker against powerful bullets or strong attacks.

7) Neomorph

The Neomorph, first seen in Alien: Covenant, is a more savage type of Xenomorph. Instead of developing from eggs and facehuggers, it spreads through tiny spores released by mutated plants. These spores quickly infect a host, with the creature violently bursting out of their back or throat. Neomorphs are even more aggressive than regular Xenomorphs, but they aren’t as clever or stealthy, relying purely on instinct to kill anything nearby. While incredibly fast and fierce in a fight, they’re also more vulnerable to bullets because their bodies aren’t as heavily armored as the traditional Xenomorphs.

6) Drone

The classic Xenomorph Drone is the most recognizable creature from the Alien movies. Created inside a human host, it walks upright and uses a mix of cunning, intelligence, and raw strength to hunt. It has a sleek, dome-shaped head and a deadly inner mouth, and is incredibly adaptable, often hiding within the structures of spaceships. The Drone prefers to pick off its victims one by one, using vents and shafts to attack from surprise. Its tough outer shell can withstand most damage, and its blood is highly corrosive, making close combat extremely dangerous. This combination of smarts and powerful biology is what defines the entire alien species in the films.

5) Warrior

In James Cameron’s Aliens, he transformed the series with intense action and introduced a new type of Xenomorph: the Warriors. These heavily armored creatures are built for combat and act as the main soldiers of the hive. Unlike earlier Xenomorphs, they don’t prioritize self-preservation and fearlessly attack, even against heavily armed enemies like the Colonial Marines. They’re incredibly strong, able to rip through steel doors and drag armored soldiers away. What’s even more frightening is their ability to work together, allowing them to bypass security systems and find weaknesses in structures like the Hadley’s Hope colony.

4) Predalien

As a huge fan of the Alien and Predator films, the Predalien is seriously terrifying. It’s basically what happens when the relentless breeding of the Xenomorph combines with the sheer power of a Predator. This thing isn’t just strong, it’s unbelievably powerful – capable of taking on and beating experienced Predators in a fight, smashing through concrete like it’s nothing. But what really sets it apart is how it reproduces. Forget laying eggs; this creature forces embryos directly down people’s throats! It can instantly create a whole swarm of new threats while simultaneously being an almost unstoppable force. Honestly, in the entire Alien vs. Predator universe, it’s one of the most frightening creatures they’ve ever come up with.

3) Newborn

The Newborn is a terrifying creature created through cloning and genetic manipulation, as seen in Alien Resurrection. It wasn’t born in the usual way for Xenomorphs; instead, it was born through a gruesome, mammalian birth from a cloned Queen that had absorbed human DNA. Unlike its ancestors, the Newborn has pale skin, deeply set eyes, and a more human-like face, losing the smooth, mechanical look of other Xenomorphs. It’s incredibly strong, able to kill its own mother with a single blow. However, it acts like a confused and unstable baby, quickly becoming attached to Ripley’s clone and showing a disturbing form of affection, which ultimately becomes its downfall.

2) The Offspring

The Offspring, first appearing in the thrilling finale of Alien: Romulus, is born from a terrifying experiment: injecting a pregnant woman with the Prometheus strain. This creature doesn’t develop naturally; instead, it quickly grows into a huge, monstrous form, combining traits of humans, the Engineers, and the Xenomorphs. With its stretched skull, completely black eyes, and disturbingly human face, the Offspring is designed to be deeply unsettling, breaking from the usual look of creatures in the Alien series. It’s incredibly strong, easily defeating robots and surviving serious injuries as it relentlessly chases Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny) through the abandoned space station.

1) Queen

The Queen is the most powerful creature in the xenomorph hive, controlling all other aliens. First appearing in the movie Aliens (1986), she’s a huge, imposing figure with a crown-like head, extra arms, and a large organ for laying eggs. Though she usually stays put to focus on reproduction, she can break free and become a surprisingly fast and incredibly tough fighter. Regular bullets barely scratch her armored hide, and her powerful tail can easily pierce even strong synthetic bodies, like that of Bishop. The Queen’s ability to lead thousands of aliens while also being a formidable opponent makes her the ultimate example of xenomorph evolution.
