The upcoming 2026 reboot, Evil Dead Burn, is taking the Evil Dead series in a completely new direction, which might surprise some fans, but is likely a good thing. It’s rare for a horror franchise to stay consistently well-reviewed for very long. We’ve seen this with many series, like Scream and the Conjuring Universe – they often start strong but receive less positive feedback as new installments are released.
Many franchises, like Child’s Play and the Chucky TV series, have bounced back from weak entries to earn critical praise. However, the Evil Dead series stands out as the only one consistently praised by reviewers for decades. Every Evil Dead movie has been a critical success – even the 2013 remake received a respectable 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is the lowest score any film in the series has ever received.
The Evil Dead franchise continues to impress critics by constantly reinventing itself. The 2023 film, Evil Dead Rise, received an excellent 85% rating, matching the score of the original 1981 film directed by Sam Raimi. This ability to refresh the series with each new installment – including the upcoming Evil Dead Burn in 2026 – seems to be key to its ongoing critical success, rather than sticking to a consistent formula.
Evil Dead Burn Has A Whole New Story Setup & Setting (Again)
Sébastien Vaniček, known for directing Infested, helms Evil Dead Burn, a new installment starring Souheila Yacoub (from Climax). The story follows a grieving widow who visits her in-laws’ remote house after her husband dies. This somber visit quickly descends into chaos and violence when the notorious Necronomicon from the Evil Dead series is opened, unleashing the Deadites once more. Notably, this is the first time the franchise has taken place entirely within a haunted house, and it introduces several other significant changes to the formula.
Following 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, which featured Deadites terrorizing a family in a city apartment building, the new film, Evil Dead Burn, moves the horror to a secluded suburban home during a widow’s meeting with her in-laws. While the 2013 Evil Dead reboot, like the first two films, used a remote cabin as its setting, it had a unique reason for bringing the characters there: they were helping a friend overcome a heroin addiction, rather than simply going on a vacation.
The 2013 Evil Dead quickly established itself as a serious character study before any supernatural events occurred, a departure from the original film which was initially lighthearted and fun until the Deadites showed up. The 1981 Evil Dead started as a carefree movie about friends hanging out, making the sudden, violent attacks by the Deadites all the more shocking. Meanwhile, 1987’s Evil Dead II was a much more comedic and frantic film, essentially retelling the story of the first movie from the beginning.
The Evil Dead Franchise Reinvents Itself With Every Movie
As a huge fan of the Evil Dead series, I always found it interesting how Evil Dead II reinvented itself. They kept the iconic cabin, but swapped the big group of friends for just a couple looking for a romantic getaway. Honestly, I thought that might mean fewer victims, but the movie quickly went wild! It introduced a ton of new, over-the-top characters and leaned hard into the slapstick horror, making it much sillier and darker than the first film. And that crazy ending? It perfectly set the stage for Army of Darkness, which took the whole thing in a completely different, and equally awesome, direction.
Army of Darkness is a funny, action-packed adventure film featuring the Deadites as enemies. It’s even more comedic than Evil Dead II, and follows the hero as he’s transported to the Middle Ages to help King Arthur fight undead monsters. As this shows, each Evil Dead movie – including Evil Dead Rise, the 2013 “remake”, Army of Darkness, Evil Dead II, and the original The Evil Dead – has taken its own unique approach, which is why the series has consistently been well-received by critics.
Changing The Evil Dead Format Has Kept The Franchise Popular
Many horror series find a successful formula and repeat it, sometimes disappointing fans who are hoping for fresh and creative scares. But the Evil Dead movies stand out – and consistently receive praise – because each film reinvents its story and location. This approach is especially unique when compared to more traditional slasher franchises like Scream, Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
Changing the location of Evil Dead Burn is a gamble, but Evil Dead Rise also took a chance by moving to a city, and it turned out great. The new film’s premise – a widow finding comfort with her in-laws – might seem too depressing for this usually lighthearted series. However, Evil Dead Rise’s surprisingly dark and cruel mood was actually a key to its success.
Evil Dead Rise didn’t hold back, eliminating popular characters and making the demonic forces particularly nasty. To be even better, the next film, Evil Dead Burn, needs to be even darker – especially considering a demon in Rise threatened to devour the unborn child of the main character. The grim premise of Burn seems fitting, and it also cleverly avoids a long-standing problem with the series’ storylines.
One consistent challenge in the Evil Dead films is explaining why characters would ever read the clearly dangerous Necronomicon. Evil Dead Rise addressed this with naive teenagers, while the 2013 reboot was criticized for not explaining why its characters seemed so eager to bring about their own misfortune. However, a character dealing with overwhelming sadness, like the lead in Evil Dead Burn, might have a more understandable reason to search for answers in the paranormal than characters in previous Evil Dead installments.
