22 Years Later, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Finally Pays Off 1 Massive Revenge of the Sith Rumor

Season 1, Episode 8 of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord includes a subtle reference to Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. While the series and the prequel films generally expand on the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, it’s widely agreed that Darth Maul’s potential was never fully realized in that film. Over the last decade, Star Wars: The Clone Wars has worked to address this, and Shadow Lord represents the most significant effort yet to give Maul the story he deserved.

Episode 8 takes an interesting turn by referencing elements from Episode III – but not specifically Revenge of the Sith. The episode is titled “The Creeping Fear,” which was a popular online guess for the title of Episode III back in 2004, before the actual title was revealed.

Back then, a title called ‘The Creeping Fear’ was widely shared online, even appearing on the official Star Wars website as a supposed announcement – though it turned out to be an April Fool’s Day prank (according to StereoNet). Other titles that were considered included ‘Rise of the Empire’ and ‘Birth of the Empire’, but ‘The Creeping Fear’ was especially intriguing and would have paired nicely with the story of Darth Maul, as seen in ‘Maul – Shadow Lord’.

“The Creeping Fear” Is A Great Title For Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Episode 8

Looking back, Revenge of the Sith was a better title for Episode III than The Creeping Fear, though it’s easy to say that now. While The Creeping Fear sounds intriguing, it’s a bit too similar to The Phantom Menace, which doesn’t quite work for a concluding film. On the other hand, even for Star Wars, a title like Rise/Birth of the Empire would have been too obvious. Revenge hits a good middle ground – and it cleverly references an earlier idea, as Return of the Jedi was originally going to be called Revenge of the Jedi.

Episode 8 of Maul – Shadow Lord is particularly effective. It powerfully shows the Empire’s expanding influence, now reaching into the criminal underworld Maul is trying to control. We also see Devon Izara’s fear of the dark side, and how she’s increasingly drawn to its power. Most importantly, the episode reveals how Darth Sidious exploited Maul’s vulnerabilities during his Sith training, making Maul an even more sympathetic and tragic character. It’s a strong episode overall, and includes a clever nod to wider Star Wars lore for fans to appreciate.

I’m so excited! The last two episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Season 1 are coming to Disney+ on May 4th – of course! It’s the perfect day for more Star Wars!
