Spider-Man: Brand New Day Is Continuing the MCU’s Oldest Peter Parker Problem

Okay, so I’m really excited about Spider-Man: Brand New Day – it looks like a big step up from what we’ve seen before. Honestly, the MCU has done a pretty great job with Spider-Man so far, balancing making him fit into the bigger Marvel universe while still feeling like the Peter Parker we know and love from the comics. No Way Home definitely paved the way for Brand New Day to be the most accurate Spider-Man movie yet, but I’m a little worried it’s still stumbling into the same old problems that have plagued the series.

Tom Holland first appeared as Spider-Man within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War, immediately becoming part of the Avengers’ world. While this connection was a benefit compared to previous Spider-Man actors like Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, it also meant the MCU hadn’t explored the more grounded, everyday struggles of Spider-Man. The events of No Way Home reset things by making everyone forget Peter Parker’s identity, leaving him genuinely on his own for the first time within the MCU. However, recent storylines haven’t fully delivered on the potential of this fresh start.

Brand New Day Is Another Spider-Man Team-Up Movie

While Brand New Day is considered the fourth solo Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s not truly a standalone film. Each of the Spider-Man movies within the MCU has prominently featured another popular Marvel hero as part of the story.

Iron Man played a significant part in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the movie started a trend of portraying Peter Parker as a successor to him. Spider-Man: Far From Home featured Nick Fury heavily, essentially making him a co-lead. The plot of Spider-Man: No Way Home revolved around Doctor Strange, and ultimately, Peter Parker had to join forces with Spider-Men played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to defeat villains who had returned from past Spider-Man films.

The new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie is continuing the trend of bringing in characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s doing so by adding Frank Castle, the Punisher, and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. Interestingly, neither of these heroes have ever appeared with Spider-Man in the MCU before. While Iron Man and Doctor Strange had previous interactions with Spider-Man, the inclusion of the Punisher and Hulk feels more unexpected. Although these characters have a history with Spider-Man in the comic books, it still seems odd to bring in their MCU versions when Spider-Man hasn’t even had a dedicated solo film yet.

It’s great seeing Spider-Man interact with other heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that’s a big part of why fans enjoy him being included. But after appearing in four of his own movies and several team-up films, it’s time for a truly standalone Spider-Man story. Peter doesn’t always need to be with other superheroes, and the next movie should focus solely on him and his own adventures.

Spider-Man’s Team-Up Problem Could Be Fixed By Brand New Day

Throughout the Spider-Man films, Peter Parker has consistently been treated like a less experienced protégé by the other heroes he interacts with. He’s been positioned as Iron Man’s helper in Homecoming, supervised by Nick Fury in Far From Home, and constantly corrected by Doctor Strange in No Way Home. Early signs suggest this pattern will continue in Brand New Day, given the Punisher’s authoritative attitude and the fact that Peter seeks guidance from Bruce Banner in the trailer.

The recent Brand New Day storyline could lead to a more promising direction for Spider-Man films. If future movies continue to include heroes from the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe, they can avoid portraying Peter Parker as immature. There’s a lot of talk that Sadie Sink might be joining Marvel as a character like Firestar or Jean Grey, and if she or other young heroes are featured in a future Spider-Man film, Peter could take on a mentor role – a refreshing change of pace.

Even though Peter Parker is still relatively new to being a hero, he’s been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over ten years. He’s now experienced enough to mentor a team of younger, local heroes, and a team-up similar to the classic Defenders would be a great direction for the next Spider-Man movie. If the fifth film includes a crossover with other heroes, it would be more enjoyable to see it inspired by shows like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends or Ultimate Spider-Man rather than previous approaches.
