The new Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is now in theaters, which is exciting news for fans of the franchise. However, with only a few future projects – Star Wars Starfighter, season 2 of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, and season 2 of Ahsoka – officially confirmed, people are starting to wonder what’s next for the Star Wars universe.
Star Wars has gone through some big changes. It started as a film series, then shifted heavily towards TV shows starting in 2019, and now seems to be refocusing on movies again. The key to its future success probably lies in finding a good mix of both, and these three projects could achieve just that.
3) Dawn of the Jedi

Out of all the projects listed, only Dawn of the Jedi has been officially announced. Director James Mangold’s film, which explores the origins of the Jedi—the very first ones who lived thousands of years before the events in the prequel trilogy—was revealed at Star Wars Celebration 2023. However, the project stalled and is now confirmed to be paused.
It would be really disappointing if this movie never happened. Fans have been asking for it for a long time, especially since this period and story haven’t been explored much within the Star Wars universe. Plus, it would bring something fresh to the franchise, as it takes place outside of the Skywalker family’s story – something the movies haven’t really done before.
2) A Live-Action Clone Wars

A live-action version of Star Wars: The Clone Wars hasn’t been officially announced, but many fans have been requesting it. While some fans claim there’s no interest, that’s simply not true, and the project would likely be divisive. Although it’s understandable that Star Wars sometimes needs to explore new directions, like with Dawn of the Jedi, a live-action Clone Wars series would still be a fantastic undertaking.
Now is a great time to make this show because the window to feature Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor, the original prequel trilogy actors, is closing. Fortunately, both actors have expressed interest, and the first season of Ahsoka already introduced Ariana Greenblatt as a young, live-action Ahsoka Tano, perfectly setting up the show’s potential.
1) An R-Rated Darth Vader Movie

Recently, many Star Wars fans have been talking about wanting an R-rated movie focused on Darth Vader. Like the proposed ‘Dawn of the Jedi’ project, it would be a bold new direction for the franchise, and it could be incredibly exciting. Vader is a truly frightening villain, and recent Star Wars stories have only reinforced that idea.
The recent series Maul – Shadow Lord highlighted just how terrifying Darth Vader can be – a true horror villain, despite George Lucas’s intention for Star Wars to be family-friendly. An R-rated movie fully embracing Vader’s evil side would be ideal, and though it’s unlikely Lucasfilm/Disney would make it, they really ought to consider it.
