31 Years Later, the Jumanji Sequel Fans Really Wanted Is Closer Than Ever After Latest Update

I still remember being blown away by Jumanji when it came out in 1996! It was the perfect fantasy adventure movie for that time, and the special effects – a mix of real sets and computer graphics – were incredible. It made a ton of money – over $260 million! – and led to a cartoon show and all sorts of Jumanji toys, including a real board game you could actually play. Like a lot of big movies back then, the ending hinted that the adventure wasn’t truly finished, that maybe the events could happen somewhere else. But honestly, a sequel never materialized, which was a bit of a disappointment.

After a long wait, a new Jumanji movie is finished filming! Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle—the 2017 sequel starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan—was a huge hit and led to another sequel, and now a fourth film. Jack Black and Alex Wolff have both announced that production is complete. This new Jumanji movie will flip the script from the previous one, bringing the game’s world into our reality and letting the characters interact with real people.

2026’s Jumanji Finally Delivers the Sequel Fans Wanted

People who enjoyed the Jumanji movies were excited by the 2017 reboot, which finally showed what the inside of the Jumanji game looked like. The original film hinted at this with Robin Williams’ character being trapped inside for years, sharing mysterious stories about his experiences. While Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level continued the adventure, fans were still hoping for a return to the original concept of Jumanji impacting the real world. Fortunately, a post-credits scene in The Next Level suggested this might happen, and now there’s even more evidence to support that idea.

Sony previously announced the new Jumanji film was going back to its original style, and recent photos confirm this. The first image showed the four main characters – played by Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan – in a Christmas setting, indicating they’ve entered the real world. A new photo from Jack Black shows him and the other actors who play their in-game avatars alongside actor Ser’Darius Blain, something fans have been hoping to see for nearly ten years.

Wolff’s photo also revealed the return of Madison Iseman, Ser’Darius Blain, and Morgan Turner, meaning they’ll be reprising their roles in the new movie. It’s likely they’ll share a scene with their digital selves from the previous films, probably for a funny moment.

It’s still unclear how the next Jumanji movie will combine its two groups of actors, or if it will capture the spirit of the first film by revisiting its original concept. Regardless, the sequel promises to finally reveal something hinted at over thirty years ago, even without any of the original cast members returning.

The latest Jumanji film is scheduled to come out this Christmas, just one week before the releases of Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Chapter Three.
