35 Years Later, the Sci-Fi Franchise Disney Gave Up on Too Soon is Getting a New Release

The world of entertainment can be unpredictable. While some movies become huge hits and launch long-running franchises, others unfortunately fail to catch on. Despite having great characters and stories, some films just don’t find an audience right away, and that was true for the movie The Rocketeer 35 years ago. It didn’t do well in theaters, which led Disney to abandon plans for sequels. But now, the adventurous hero Cliff Secord is returning in a brand new release!

The Rocketeer Is Making a Comics Comeback (And The Movies Need to Take Note)

The latest Rocketeer book, The Rocketeer: Infiltrator, promises an exciting adventure for both longtime fans and new readers. It’s also a great sign for the hero’s overall revival. Another recent release, The Rocketeer: The Island, is based on an unfinished story by the Rocketeer’s creator, Dan Stevens. That story sends the hero on a mission to rescue Amelia Earhart, which unexpectedly leads to a strange island filled with unusual dangers. The Rocketeer: The Island is already doing well with fans – sales of issue #4 increased compared to issue #3. If Infiltrator is equally successful, it will demonstrate continued interest in the Rocketeer, and Hollywood should pay attention.

Back in 1991, Disney launched The Rocketeer with hopes of building a major franchise – sequels, toys, the works. Unfortunately, despite some positive reviews and a dedicated fanbase, the film didn’t perform well in theaters, and Disney cancelled those ambitious plans. Fans have been asking for a sequel ever since. While a short-lived Disney Junior series featuring the hero’s great-granddaughter aired in 2019, it was quickly cancelled. Now, with nostalgia being so popular in entertainment and the recent success of Rocketeer comics, Hollywood might be ready to revisit this classic hero and give him another shot.
