Long Lost Disney Animated Series is Finally Making a Comeback

Streaming services have opened up a world of entertainment, letting fans discover shows and movies they might have missed before. Disney+ has a great collection of classic cartoons like Gargoyles, DuckTales, and X-Men: The Animated Series, but not every beloved show from Disney’s history is available there. Fortunately, a fan-favorite series that’s been unavailable for a long time is returning, and it’s coming to Disney+ sooner than expected.

I remember when The Weekenders first came out on ABC back in 2000. It ran for four seasons and had a dedicated fanbase, but surprisingly, it never made its way onto Disney+ – which was especially annoying because Disney+ had actually announced it would be added back in 2019. We’d been waiting a long time, but it looks like the first two seasons are finally arriving on May 25th! It’s not a full comeback for the show after all these years, but it’s definitely encouraging to see Disney hasn’t forgotten about it.

The Troubled Tale of The Weekenders

Back in 2019, Disney+ announced on social media that the show The Weekenders would be coming to their streaming service, even saying it would be available ‘shortly.’ However, it never actually appeared. Disney’s original announcement read, “Great news! The Weekenders seasons 1 and 2 (episodes 1-39) are coming soon! We don’t have a specific date yet, but stay tuned as we add more content. As Fairy Godmother says, ‘Even miracles take a little time!’

It’s a bit surprising, but the voice actors from The Weekenders – Jason Marsden, Phil Lamarr, and Grey DeLisle – recently reunited at the Huntsville Comic & Pop Culture Expo. They even shared a video of their get-together and pointed out that the show wasn’t available on Disney+. Interestingly, The Weekenders has moved around to different networks over the years. It originally aired on ABC, then UPN, and later Toon Disney, before disappearing. Now, it’s getting ready to stream on Disney+.

For those unfamiliar, The Weekenders is a comedy series about the everyday lives of four friends – Tino, Lor, Carver, and Tish. The show’s return is part of a new “Disney+ Throwbacks” campaign, which will also bring back classics like The Brave Little Toaster. Plus, fans can look forward to the arrival of Camp Rock 3 and a new season of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place as part of the celebration.
