4 Shows to Watch Before Interview with the Vampire’s Lestat Spinoff

A highly-rated TV show is expanding with a new series focusing on the character of Lestat. Based on Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, this show will delve into Lestat’s life and perspective, revealing his history and how he experienced the events we saw in the first two seasons of Interview with the Vampire. It’s a challenging undertaking, as Lestat is a complex character – captivating, ruthless, insecure, dramatic, and incredibly self-centered – and has always been difficult to portray effectively.

As we get ready for the show to begin, why not find something else to watch? Here are a few shows that share a similar vibe to The Vampire Lestat. They aren’t exactly the same, but they’ll help you get in the mood!

4) The Sandman

You might not expect it, but watching The Sandman actually prepares you to enjoy The Vampire Lestat. That’s because The Sandman portrays immortality as a heavy weight, not a glamorous gift. The show centers on Morpheus (played by Tom Sturridge), the Lord of Dreams, as he works to reclaim his lost powers and restore his kingdom after a long imprisonment. What’s really compelling is seeing him confront his own flaws and the harm he’s caused. It’s a story about a being who has lived for an incredibly long time and, as a result, carries a lot of regret, pride, and the weight of past actions.

Lestat is defined by his terrible choices, despite being incredibly charismatic. Similarly, Morpheus, even as a powerful, ancient being, struggles with the consequences of his own ego and emotional baggage. While the first two seasons of Interview with the Vampire didn’t fully explore Lestat’s inner life, The Sandman offers a surprisingly good idea of the kind of character depth we can now expect.

3) Hannibal

AMC’s Interview with the Vampire explores complicated relationships that are both passionate and frightening. However, the show hasn’t fully delved into the depths of these connections, especially when compared to the series Hannibal. Hannibal focuses on Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), an FBI profiler with exceptional empathy, and his entanglement with the brilliant but terrifying Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen). Beyond the suspense and striking imagery, the show is really about psychological manipulation – how someone can get inside your mind and change the way you think.

Lestat’s actions towards Louis, Claudia, and almost everyone he meets are driven by dominance, but he presents it with charisma. Similarly, Hannibal isn’t just about a predator and their prey; it’s a disturbing interplay of attraction, control, and manipulation. The Vampire Lestat promises to explore the origins of this behavior – the experiences and connections that made Lestat who he is. It’s not surprising that many find themselves strangely drawn to Lestat, much like they are with Hannibal, because of this complex dynamic.

2) American Horror Story: Hotel

American Horror Story is a show where each season features a brand new, self-contained story with a different theme. One season takes on vampires with a lot of flair, though it’s far from understated. While it differs in style from Interview with the Vampire, the show’s season, Hotel, fits this bolder approach perfectly. It centers around the Hotel Cortez in Los Angeles – a haunted building where people vanish, ghosts wander, and a character called the Countess (played by Lady Gaga) survives by feeding on blood.

Both American Horror Story: Hotel and The Vampire Lestat are visually striking and full of shocking characters designed to grab your attention. They share a similar mood, portraying vampirism as an addictive cycle, immortality as a burden, and glamour as a way to hide darkness. This season of American Horror Story is a fan favorite, and it’s easy to see why – the atmosphere and style perfectly complement the themes.

1) Daisy Jones & the Six

At first glance, this show might not appear to have much in common with The Vampire Lestat, but it actually fits better alongside shows like Daisy Jones & The Six. The series centers on a fictional 1970s rock band as they rise to fame, with the turbulent connection between its stars, Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy (Sam Claflin), fueling both their success and potential downfall. This connects to Lestat because, at his core, the vampire embodies the spirit of a rockstar – he craves attention, adoration, and lasting recognition.

It’s not just about Lestat’s actions, but also the unintentional harm he causes. Like the series Daisy Jones & The Six, the story explores how immense talent and emotional instability can be a destructive combination, especially under public scrutiny. Ultimately, it’s a story about the dangerous power of charisma. The central relationship is incredibly volatile, like two people on the verge of collapse. Interview with the Vampire already showed how damaging the connection between Lestat and Louis could be, but this expands on that, exploring similar dynamics with other vampires. Plus, The Vampire Lestat will also document him and his band while they’re on tour.

The Vampire Lestat hits AMC on June 7.
