4 Years After Crunchyroll Removal, This Shonen Jump Classic Is Impossible to Stream

It’s been four years since this popular anime series disappeared from Crunchyroll, and it’s still not available to stream anywhere. Streaming rights often change as different companies make deals, and this has become more frequent in recent years with the rise of new streaming services. A major change happened when Sentai Filmworks and Crunchyroll altered their agreement, resulting in over 100 anime projects moving to different platforms.

Starting in 2020, as Sentai Filmworks moved more of its anime to platforms like HIDIVE and Prime Video, many older titles disappeared from Crunchyroll. This trend continued in 2022 with shows like Medaka Box being removed. Sadly, Medaka Box hasn’t been available on any streaming service since it was taken down four years ago, making it currently impossible to watch legally online.

Medaka Box Is No Longer Streaming Anywhere

Originally published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 2009 by Nisio Isin and Akira Akatsuki, Medaka Box ran for five years and spanned 22 volumes. It was also adapted into a two-season anime that aired in 2012. The series hasn’t been updated since, and a lack of streaming options makes a future revival unlikely.

Medaka Box was a notable series when it first made its way to screens as well. Introducing fans to the titular Medaka Kurokawi, a first year who is elected to be the student council president with nearly 100% of the vote. Recruiting her childhood friend Zenkichi to help her fulfill students suggestions, it’s soon revealed that he school is full of kids with “abnormal” abilities that the school is experimenting on. That’s only the start of much bigger problems to come.

What’s Going on With Medaka Box?

While Medaka Box isn’t completely unavailable – you can still buy episodes on platforms like Prime Video – that’s not the ideal way to enjoy this classic anime. With two full seasons available, the best experience is to stream it all at once and see what everyone’s been talking about. This kind of binge-watching is key for older Shonen Jump series to stay popular and even lead to new projects and revivals.

Even though Medaka Box has finished airing, a revival isn’t out of the question. We’ve seen several cancelled manga from Shonen Jump get anime adaptations recently, and more are planned for this year, so anything could happen. Plus, the series was written by the same creator as the popular Monogatari franchise, making it worth checking out when it becomes available for streaming.
