Sidekicks have been a staple of superhero comics almost from the very beginning. When Robin appeared shortly after Batman, he became incredibly popular and paved the way for many other young heroes. DC Comics has a huge number of sidekick characters, ranging from trainees to full-fledged members of teams like the Justice League. Sidekicks allow established heroes to mentor the next generation and create new heroes who can potentially surpass them. They’re a great way to introduce fresh faces, expand the story’s world, and demonstrate a hero’s lasting influence. However, despite all these benefits, Marvel Comics has surprisingly few sidekicks.
It’s unusual for Marvel superheroes to mentor young partners or train new heroes. Many openly oppose the idea, making it hard to develop the next generation like we see in DC Comics. However, despite this reluctance, those few Marvel heroes who have taken on sidekicks often become incredibly important figures. Today, we’ll be looking at seven of Marvel’s best sidekicks and ranking them based on their overall significance to the Marvel Universe.
7) Toro

Toro was the partner to the original Human Torch, and unlike his robotic mentor, Toro was born an Inhuman. As one of Marvel’s earliest sidekicks, Toro didn’t become a major hero himself, but he remains an important part of Marvel’s legacy. The original Human Torch and his fellow wartime heroes are foundational to the entire Marvel Universe, serving as the basis for all subsequent superheroes. Toro was a key, though often unnoticed, member of the Invaders, the leading team of that time. He may not be widely remembered, but he consistently contributed to victories and played a vital role in shaping the Marvel Universe as we know it.
6) Spider-Boy

I love Bailey Briggs. He’s Spider-Man’s one and only sidekick, a rambunctious kid with a heart of gold, and a breath of fresh air that was desperately needed. He captures that childhood wonder and awe that so many readers once had for the superhero genre, but lose as they get older. Unfortunately, as great as Spider-Boy is, there’s no denying that he’s not at all necessary. His introductory plot was literally confronting how he’d been erased from history and nothing had changed. If Marvel wrote Spider-Boy out of existence again tomorrow, then almost nothing would change. The only reason he ranks above Toro is that he’s an active participant in lots of new stories, so he has a lot more potential to become more impactful.
5) Amadeus Cho

Most comic fans now know Amadeus Cho as the Hulk, though he was previously known as Brawn and even the Totally Awesome Hulk. Interestingly, his original storyline wasn’t about becoming a Hulk at all – it was about becoming a god! Early in his career, he worked with Hercules as a scientific assistant and sidekick, helping him tackle mythical creatures. He even briefly took on the role of the new Prince of Power, poised to replace Hercules, but his path changed, and he became a gamma-powered hero in his own right. While Cho is a capable hero, his time as the Hulk wasn’t long-lasting, and he’s become less prominent recently. He has a lot of untapped potential, but he needs that one big opportunity to truly shine.
4) War Machine

Rhodey started as a supporting character to Iron Man, but quickly became a hero in his own right. He famously stepped in as Iron Man for a period, and eventually forged his own path as the hero War Machine. Rhodey is incredibly important to the story of Iron Man, often serving as Tony Stark’s closest friend and most reliable ally. Over time, he’s become a well-established hero, with relationships like his with Captain Marvel and membership in numerous superhero teams. His death sparked the events of Civil War II, a tragic moment that had a lasting impact on the Marvel Universe. War Machine has repeatedly altered the course of history, and will likely continue to do so.
3) Bucky

Bucky is arguably the most well-known sidekick in the Marvel Universe. The name ‘Bucky’ now represents anyone who’s assisted Captain America, not just the original James Buchanan Barnes. He’s become a symbol, inspiring new generations of heroes to support Captain America and fight for good. While the original Bucky is a remarkable hero, his journey as the Winter Soldier has deeply impacted Captain America’s story and helped save the world. Bucky’s importance to the Marvel Universe is undeniable.
2) Falcon

Sam Wilson first appeared as Falcon, teaming up with Captain America as a fresh and popular partner. He redefined what a sidekick could be, adding a vital new viewpoint to Captain America’s adventures. Now operating as the new Captain America himself, Sam has become just as impactful a hero as the original. He’s arguably the most successful hero on this list, establishing himself as a key figure and inspiring leader within the Marvel Universe. Sam began as a fantastic sidekick, but has evolved into a truly unique hero, even while carrying on a legendary name.
1) Rick Jones

Rick Jones is arguably the most important sidekick in Marvel history. He’s been central to the origins of several major heroes, starting with the Hulk and later becoming a key figure for Captain America and Captain Marvel. Beyond being a sidekick, he’s been a member of the Avengers, tapped into powerful cosmic forces, and even become a host to a symbiote, now known as Captain Spider. Rick’s impact on the Marvel Universe is immense – he’s supported so many heroes and shaped their stories in a truly significant way.
