Will The Masters of the Universe Movie Include One of the Craziest Parts of He-Man Lore?

Get ready for Masters of the Universe to hit the big screen! A new generation will soon discover the world of He-Man. The film, directed by Travis Knight (known for Bumblebee), tells the story of Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) who finds himself powerless and stranded on Earth, separated from his duty to protect Eternia. After 15 years, Adam finally recovers the Sword of Power and returns home, only to find his kingdom has been taken over by his enemy, Skeletor (Jared Leto). Now, Adam must regain his powers as He-Man and rally Eternia’s heroes to defeat Skeletor before it’s too late.

This new take on He-Man seems to be exciting both longtime fans and newcomers (kids), which is an impressive accomplishment. There have been at least five He-Man/Masters of the Universe TV shows since the 1980s; however, the original series seems to be influencing this 2026 film more than anything. Travis Knight’s Transformers spinoff film proved that he knows the deep lore of these iconic Millennial animated series, which raises a very interesting question about Masters of the Universe

He-Man Was Surprsingly Gentle

He-Man is a powerfully built hero who fights wearing armor and riding a fierce tiger. While incredibly strong, fans of the original 1980s cartoon will remember he never used his powerful sword to harm living creatures. He did use it often in battles – to defeat robots, break through obstacles, or defend against energy attacks.

I always loved how He-Man handled villains! It was so cool that he never actually hurt anyone, not even Skeletor or his goons. Instead of, like, cutting them down or really beating them up, they’d always show these funny little scenes of him just tossing them into mud or water to get them out of the way. That was a big part of what made the original series so charming, honestly!

Master of the Universe Will Get Rougher & Tougher With He-Man’s War

Masters of the Universe (2026) is rated PG-13 “for sequences of violence/action, some suggestive material, and language.” That rating suggests that we could see more violence from this new take on He-Man, but does that mean it will be He-Man himself who is rougher? Or just the forces around him, in a world where Skeletor rules?

The trailers for Master of the Universe show He-Man will be battling Skeletor’s forces with his sword, though it’s questionable whether those enemies are actually alive. Director Travis Knight clearly understands the source material, including classic scenes of He-Man throwing objects and using his Sword of Power to unleash powerful energy blasts. These are fun references to the original cartoon, and the movie likely contains many more hidden nods for fans to discover.

Travis Knight is directing the new Masters of the Universe movie. The screenplay is a collaboration between Chris Butler (known for ParaNorman), the Nee Brothers (The Lost City), and David Callaham (Mortal Kombat, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse). The film features Nicholas Galitzine and Jared Leto in leading roles, alongside Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-at-Arms, Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress, and Kristen Wiig voicing Roboto. James Purefoy and Charlotte Riley will play King Randor and Queen Marlena, respectively, with Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram Man, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, James Wilkinson as Mekaneck, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, James Apps as Spikor, and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson as Goat Man.
