Forty years after its release, James Cameron’s sequel remains a landmark achievement in filmmaking. Celebrating its anniversary this year, the film is as thrilling and impactful today as it was when it premiered in 1986. As a follow-up to Ridley Scott’s popular sci-fi horror film, Alien, it redefined the genre and continues to influence special effects even now.
Though some movie fans prefer Blade Runner to Aliens, the 1986 film Aliens quietly became a blueprint for countless science fiction movies that came after it. As it marks its 38th anniversary, Aliens truly deserves recognition as a landmark sci-fi sequel.
Aliens Is the Perfect Sci-Fi Sequel
The story follows Ellen Ripley as she’s awakened from a long sleep in cryo-sleep. She travels with a representative from the Weyland-Yutani corporation to a terraforming colony on the moon LV-426, unknowingly putting herself face-to-face with the deadly xenomorphs again. This time, however, there are far more people at risk, and Ripley is the only one who knows how to fight these creatures. Sigourney Weaver reprises her role as the courageous hero, determined to protect a young girl from the xenomorphs, who are now commanded by a powerful Xenomorph Queen.
Though it seems obvious now, Aliens was truly groundbreaking when it came out. Director James Cameron took over from Ridley Scott, seven years after the original Alien (1979), and brought a lot more action to the series. This makes Aliens feel much faster and more energetic than the slower, more suspenseful Alien. While keeping what fans loved about the first film, the sequel successfully shifted the focus from horror to action.
He didn’t just create a successful film; he rescued the entire Alien series from potentially ending after only one movie. Although the first Alien was a hit with both audiences and critics, 20th Century Fox was hesitant to make a sequel. Getting the project started took a long time, and the production was famously difficult. Despite all the challenges, the final movie exceeded everyone’s expectations.
The film Aliens was a huge financial success, earning about $181 million worldwide on a budget of just $18 million. Though it didn’t quite match the box office numbers of the first film, it was a major win for everyone involved. Even forty years later, Aliens remains a critically acclaimed science fiction classic, with a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences overwhelmingly agree, giving it a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter and an average score of 8.4/10 on IMDb.
40 Years Later, Aliens Still Hasn’t Been Topped
Despite often being left out of conversations about great sequels, the 1986 film Aliens remains a standout example of how to do it right. In a world now filled with endless sequels, prequels, and reboots, Aliens shows us how to build a franchise successfully while still honoring the original film.
Aliens doesn’t just repeat the formula of the first film; it takes the story in a completely new direction. Instead of another small, enclosed setting, the sequel broadens the scope of Ellen Ripley’s fight for survival. The danger is amplified by the introduction of the Xenomorph Queen, a far more formidable enemy than the single alien she faced before. Ripley also isn’t alone this time, as she teams up with other humans to combat the extraterrestrial threat. In all ways, Aliens is a larger and more ambitious film than the original.
While Aliens doesn’t shy away from action, it’s more than just bigger set pieces. The film smartly expands on the first movie by giving Ellen Ripley a powerful new motivation: protecting Newt, a young girl she meets. Aliens recognizes that audiences need to connect with Ripley’s journey, and making her a protector elevates the emotional impact of the story. Other films have tried this approach, but Aliens pulls it off flawlessly.
James Cameron’s Aliens really showed filmmakers how to create a successful movie franchise. As the classic 1986 film marks its 40th anniversary, it’s important to recognize how it transformed a potentially great, one-time horror movie into one of the most
What’s Next for the Alien Franchise?
As a huge fan, it’s so exciting to see the Alien franchise potentially entering a new golden age! For a long time, it felt like filmmakers were struggling to figure out how to continue the story after the original films. Even recent movies like Alien: Covenant just didn’t quite capture that same magic, and I wasn’t sure if there were any good stories left to tell. But lately, there’s a real creative spark, and I’m genuinely thrilled about the future of this universe. It’s been forty years since Aliens and almost forty-seven since the very first movie, and it feels like things are finally heading in the right direction.
The new film, Alien: Romulus, released in 2024, takes place between the events of the original Alien and Aliens. It’s designed to recapture the suspense and horror of the 1979 classic. After a successful theatrical run and generally positive reviews, Alien: Romulus demonstrated continued interest in the Alien franchise, and a sequel is now being developed with director Fede Álvarez returning as a producer.
The popular film franchise Alien has now expanded to television. Created by Noah Hawley, the show is set far in the future and has been well-received, leading to a second season. Alien: Earth promises to build on the series’ success and could introduce new stories for future installments.
Beyond the many exciting projects already planned, there might be more surprises coming for the Alien series. The Predator franchise has done very well recently thanks to director Dan Trachtenberg, and that’s given fans hope for the future. People involved with both Alien and Predator have expressed interest in bringing the iconic Xenomorphs and Yautja (Predators) into a crossover, but there’s been no official confirmation yet.
A new film featuring Sigourney Weaver as her famous sci-fi character is in development. Weaver hasn’t played Ellen Ripley since 1997’s Alien: Resurrection, almost thirty years ago. Recently, she expressed interest in revisiting the role, and screenwriter Walter Hill is reportedly working on a script. Although the film isn’t confirmed yet, there’s a possibility Ripley could return to cinemas for one final adventure.
Released forty years ago, Aliens redefined how to make a science fiction sequel. Directed by James Cameron, the 1986 film transformed a successful horror movie into a major franchise. Even today, the Alien films are still incredibly popular and continue to influence pop culture, ensuring their lasting impact for years to come.
