45 Years Later, an Iconic ’80s Sci-fi Movie Is Getting a Remake (But Can It Work Without the Star?)

The entertainment industry has shown that nostalgia can be a really effective strategy, as evidenced by the many remakes, reboots, and sequels based on older properties. Because of this, studios are constantly searching for beloved classics to revive, often with a modern update to attract both longtime fans and new audiences. We’ve seen a lot of 1980s franchises return in recent years with mixed results, and Hollywood doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Now, a new version of a hugely popular action movie from that decade is officially being made, and some fans are likely wondering how the filmmakers will handle it.

StudioCanal revealed at CinemaCon this week that they’re planning a reboot of Escape From New York. They didn’t share any specifics about who will be involved – like the director, actors, or when it might be made – suggesting the project is still very early in the planning stages.

Can Escape From New York Work Without Kurt Russell?

John Carpenter’s Escape From New York is a classic action film starring Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a one-time hero who must rescue the president from a Manhattan that’s been turned into a maximum-security prison. The film was a critical and commercial success, making $50 million on a $6 million budget. Today, it’s a beloved cult favorite, praised for Carpenter’s unique style and Russell’s iconic performance. Russell essentially created a defining action star of the 1980s, captivating audiences with his tough, no-nonsense persona, and his impact is significant for anyone revisiting this story now.

It’s unclear how StudioCanal will handle the new Escape From New York film, but it will probably feature a completely new cast. While Kurt Russell is still working, he’s 75 years old and likely no longer suited to lead an action movie. StudioCanal probably sees this reboot as the start of a new series, similar to how the original Escape From New York led to Escape From L.A. This means they’ll need to find a new actor to play Snake Plissken, which will be a difficult task. Kurt Russell is so strongly associated with the role that it’s hard to picture anyone else as the tough, iconic hero.

People once felt the same way about replacing Sean Connery as James Bond, and recasting iconic roles can definitely work – just look at Spider-Man, Batman, and Superman. The key to finding a new Snake will be an actor who can capture the character’s essence while also making the role their own. Simply copying Russell’s performance would doom the reboot before it even begins. Getting the casting right is crucial, and it won’t be Wyatt Russell, his son, taking on the part.

It will be fascinating to see if the planned remake of Escape From New York actually gets made. A reboot has been discussed for years, with several directors considered, but nothing has ever come of it. While StudioCanal’s recent public announcement suggests they’re serious about making it happen, we won’t know for sure until filming begins.
