They’re one of the most famous superhero teams ever created, and have been featured in many legendary stories. The League actually pioneered large-scale crossover events, starting with the original Justice League of America series. Their success even helped inspire the return of superheroes at Marvel Comics. Over the years, the Justice League consistently redefined what a superhero team could achieve, and certain stories remain fan favorites. However, these are just a few highlights from a truly incredible collection of adventures.

Everyone knows the famous Justice League adventures, but there are many incredible stories that only dedicated fans are aware of. These lesser-known tales deserve recognition, and here are seven that haven’t gotten the attention they deserve. It’s time to shine a light on these overlooked Justice League stories.

7) Forever Evil

The New 52 era of DC Comics isn’t generally well-regarded, and that’s especially true for its Justice League comics. While it was intended to be a leading title, it’s not remembered particularly fondly. However, one standout story did emerge from this period: Forever Evil, written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by David Finch. This story takes place after the heroes of Earth are defeated by villains from Earth-3’s Crime Syndicate. Surprisingly, Lex Luthor, Black Adam, Sinestro, Catwoman, Black Manta, Captain Cold, Deathstroke, a new Bizarro, and even Batman team up to stop them. It’s a unique take on the Justice League concept, and it’s incredibly satisfying to see DC’s most famous villains stepping into the heroes’ shoes to fight a bigger threat.

6) “The Lightning Saga”

As a critic, I’ve seen DC try to relaunch the Legion of Superheroes several times, and honestly, one attempt really stands out. Back in the mid-2000s, they nailed it with “The Lightning Saga,” a crossover between the Justice League and Justice Society. This story, crafted by a fantastic team including Brad Meltzer and Geoff Johns, beautifully built on earlier arcs like “The Tornado’s Path” and “The Golden Age.” It wasn’t just a fun team-up; it cleverly echoed the classic JLA/JSA crossovers of yesteryear, proving that formula could still work. Seriously, it’s been 19 years, and I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about how genuinely spectacular this story is. It deserves a revisit.

5) “The Totality”

While DC Rebirth revitalized many titles, the Justice League (Vol. 3) series struggled to find its footing. To address this, DC brought in acclaimed writer Scott Snyder. His run began with the compelling story, “The Totality,” featuring artwork from Jim Cheung, Jorge Jimenez, Doug Mahnke, and a writing contribution from James Tynion IV. This story pitted the Justice League against the Legion of Doom in a high-stakes race to claim the Totality—an incredibly powerful artifact. It delivered the large-scale action reminiscent of Grant Morrison’s JLA, launching a new, ambitious storyline for the team. It’s a truly captivating story that deserves more recognition.

4) Justice League: A Midsummer’s Nightmare

The Grant Morrison and Howard Porter run on JLA is considered one of the best team comics ever made, and it helped revitalize the Justice League in the 1990s. But before that, a lesser-known story laid the groundwork for its success: Justice League: A Midsummer’s Nightmare, created by Mark Waid, Fabian Nicieza, Jeff Johnson, and Darick Robertson. This story reunited the classic seven members – Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter – after a long hiatus, and featured a battle with the formidable Doctor Destiny. It’s a largely forgotten classic, but it played a key role in setting up the team’s success over the last three decades.

3) “Crisis on Conscience”

Okay, so everyone seems to bash Identity Crisis these days, but it was a huge deal for DC back in the mid-2000s. The whole mind-wipe thing the Justice League did? That really played out in JLA with a story called “Crisis of Conscience” – seriously, Geoff Johns, Allan Heinberg, and Chris Batista nailed it. It’s about the Secret Society of Supervillains finding out they’d been messed with, thanks to some unknown enemy, and they go after the League. The best part is seeing Batman discover what they did to him. It’s a really gripping story, full of action, drama, and suspense – I was hooked right away! A lot of fans don’t love it because of its connection to Identity Crisis, but honestly, I think it’s way better than people give it credit for.

2) Justice League Elite

I’m a huge fan of Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke’s work on JLA, and I really think their Justice League Elite run deserves more recognition – seriously, “The Obsidian Age” is amazing! It started after storylines in Action Comics and JLA, bringing back the Elite team with a new leader, Vera Black. What I loved was how it blended the Elite with the main Justice League, creating this incredible black ops superhero squad. The 12-issue series was just fantastic, putting characters like Wally West and Oliver Queen in totally unexpected situations, and it all led to a shocking showdown. It’s honestly one of the most original League stories ever, and I wish more people would check it out!

1) Justice

Alex Ross, Jim Krueger, and Doug Braithwaite’s Justice is a wonderfully nostalgic story. It begins with both the Justice League and Legion of Doom experiencing disturbing apocalyptic visions, prompting them to investigate. The villains enact a plan to win over the world’s affection, and the League must uncover their true motives and stop them. Essentially, it’s a modern take on a SuperFriends adventure, featuring classic versions of both teams and delivering a truly fantastic story. It’s one of the best Justice League stories ever told and deserves recognition as such.
