Fantasy is a huge and often debated genre, so it’s not surprising that some series are cancelled prematurely, while others drag on for too long. A few, like The Lord of the Rings (though not The Hobbit films), perfectly capture the spirit of fantasy and become classics. Unfortunately, many others either fail to impress or don’t receive the recognition they deserve.
In the movie industry, financial success often outweighs artistic vision, so it’s sadly not unexpected when promising franchises are cut short, even if they have dedicated fans. It’s always frustrating, though! Here are five films that deserved to have their stories continued with at least one more installment.
5) Kick-Ass

Whether it fully fits the ‘urban fantasy’ label is debatable, but Kick-Ass definitely includes fantastical elements, like any story with superheroes. While the film tries to offer a somewhat realistic explanation for how Dave Lizewski becomes a superhero, it’s still largely a fantasy story. The first Kick-Ass movie was a critical and commercial success, standing out from other superhero films with its unique blend of dark humor, over-the-top violence, and independent filmmaking style. It seemed like a trilogy could have been a huge hit. However, a long wait between the first and second films, combined with a change in directors and a drastically different tone in the sequel, led to disappointing results with both critics and audiences. This ultimately resulted in the cancellation of the planned third film.
Chloe Grace Moretz, who played Hit-Girl, expressed her fondness for the movie series, calling the first film particularly memorable. While she enjoyed being part of it, she wished the second movie had been approached differently, as the outcome wasn’t quite what she and the others had hoped for.
4) Percy Jackson

Everyone had a lot of fun with the first two Percy Jackson movies, and fans really wanted a third film to finish the story. Logan Lerman was great as Percy, and his connection with Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson felt genuine. However, the studio made significant changes from the books and aged up the characters, which likely explains why only two movies were made: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. The new series with Walker Scobell is fantastic, but many fans still wonder what could have happened with the original films if they’d had the chance to continue.
3) The Chronicles of Narnia

The original book series had seven novels, but the movie adaptation only covered three. This is understandable, as each new movie earned a little less money than the last. There was also disagreement within the studio about how closely the fourth film should follow the book, especially after the third movie, Prince Caspian, took significant liberties with the source material. Plus, the fourth book, The Silver Chair, was much darker and featured fewer familiar characters, making a continuation risky. The death of producer Perry Moore further discouraged Walden Media from pursuing more films. However, Netflix now owns the rights to the story from the C.S. Lewis estate, offering a chance to continue the series, reimagined with a unique perspective from Greta Gerwig.
2) Clash of the Titans

The movie Clash of the Titans was successfully rebooted in 2010, becoming a surprisingly big hit at the box office. Though loosely based on the Greek myth of Perseus and featuring a strong cast including Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes, and Liam Neeson, it received mixed reviews from critics. However, audiences loved the action-packed, visually impressive film, and it earned nearly $500 million worldwide. This success led to a sequel, Wrath of the Titans, released two years later. Unfortunately, the second film was even more critically panned and didn’t resonate as well with fans. This effectively cancelled plans for a third movie, Revenge of the Titans. Producer Basil Iwanyk confirmed the film was no longer in development. It’s a shame, as the first two movies, despite prioritizing visuals over a deep story, were entertaining and left audiences wanting a conclusion.
1) Hellboy

The biggest letdown on this list is definitely Hellboy. This series really deserved to continue, and director Guillermo del Toro had planned a third movie, leaving the second film with a cliffhanger that set up a return for the character – something fans were really excited about. Unfortunately, a third film never happened because the second one didn’t make enough money. A reboot came out in 2019 with a new cast and director, but it wasn’t successful. It’s clear that fans still want del Toro and the original actor, Ron Perlman, to finish the story and give the series the ending it deserves.
