5 Harsh Truths No Marvel Fan Will Admit About Spider-Man Movies

Spider-Man is a hugely popular and recognizable Marvel character, and his movies have consistently been a big part of the superhero film world. Since 2002, with the first film directed by Sam Raimi, we’ve seen several different versions of Spider-Man on the big screen. While these movies have given us many fantastic moments and solidified his place as a fan favorite, they aren’t without their flaws. Despite any imperfections, Spider-Man’s popularity is certainly earned.

Spider-Man movies aren’t perfect, and many share similar flaws in how they portray the character and his story. While these issues don’t ruin the films overall, and some fans don’t seem to notice them, they are still noticeable problems.

5) Their Handling Of Spider-Man Villains Leaves A Lot To Be Desired

Spider-Man movies have featured a lot of villains over the years, with varying degrees of success. A recurring problem, though, is how these villains are used in the overall story. The movies often kill them off or permanently remove them after just one appearance. This is strange, considering villains frequently reappear in the Spider-Man comics, and it makes the films feel less connected to the original stories.

4) Attempts To Innovate Spider-Man’s Story Ring Hollow

Spider-Man movies often try to put a fresh spin on the classic story, but these changes usually don’t improve the plot. While new ideas sometimes lead to cool costume designs, they rarely make the story better. Attempts to link Spider-Man’s beginnings to secrets at Oscorp, or to his parents, or to connect him with the Avengers as a young hero, just don’t feel as emotionally powerful as the original, simpler stories.

3) Spider-Man Action Scenes Rarely Capture The True Spirit Of The Hero

Many action scenes in Spider-Man movies aren’t as thrilling as they could be, and this is often missed. They tend to focus heavily on Spider-Man swinging around and using webs, rather than showcasing the impressive acrobatics that define the character. Plus, the movies often lack the witty banter during fights that fans have come to expect from Spider-Man, though this isn’t something Marvel fans frequently point out.

2) They’ve Still Not Nailed The Shared Universe Idea

Now that Spider-Man is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most fans agree he fits within that shared world. However, none of the Spider-Man movies so far have perfectly captured how he should connect to the larger Marvel Universe. The MCU tends to involve Spider-Man too much in other heroes’ stories. Meanwhile, the Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield suggested a bigger world existed, but never fully showed it. Hopefully, the upcoming movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will address this, but currently, Spider-Man films haven’t quite figured out the shared universe concept.

1) They Keep Telling The Same Story

One of the biggest problems with recent Spider-Man movies is how similar they all are. Every modern film retells the same basic story: a young Peter Parker learning to balance his normal life with being Spider-Man, and tragically losing a key mentor. They all focus on Peter struggling with responsibility before finally embracing his role as a hero. This repetitive pattern has left many fans wanting to see the movies explore some of the other great Spider-Man stories that haven’t been adapted yet.
