It’s common to re-watch favorite shows to unwind, but lately, shows are proving they don’t need to be purely lighthearted to be comforting. Real life isn’t always easy, and tackling difficult subjects with care can actually be very appealing to viewers. A show doesn’t have to be ‘cozy’ to feel good – it just needs to be honest.
While shows like The Office and Gilmore Girls sometimes touch on serious issues, they don’t always feel completely genuine in how they handle them. The trick is to use humor to honestly address difficult emotions without making fun of them, because even when life is tough, there’s often something funny about it.
Ted Lasso Approaches Mental Health With Humor and Charm
Since its debut in 2020, this widely-loved comedy – starring Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, and others – has become a fan favorite. While consistently funny and filled with endearing characters, it often doesn’t get enough credit for its surprisingly thoughtful handling of more serious issues.
Viewers begin the show aware that Ted is separated from his wife. The series goes on to explore not only his divorce, but also broader themes of mental health and the challenges people face when first seeking help.
One of the best things about Ted Lasso is how it brings up the topic of mental health, especially for men – and athletes, in particular. The show demonstrates that going to therapy isn’t a sign of weakness, but it also realistically portrays the challenges many men face with overcoming that stigma.
This is a key reason the series resonates with audiences. It doesn’t shy away from difficult issues, instead tackling them directly with a lot of humor and heart.
Life Is Messy but Beautiful in Shrinking
Released in 2023, the show Shrinking is surprisingly effective, despite its difficult premise. It begins with a tragic car accident, followed by a grieving husband and father struggling to cope and unintentionally neglecting his teenage daughter. While the situation is heartbreaking, the story also focuses on the support the community offers, making it unexpectedly comforting.
A strong cast really elevates the film. While he often plays characters who are a bit rough around the edges, and Jessica Williams is wonderfully funny as Gaby. Every actor delivers a solid performance – there isn’t a single weak link in the ensemble.
What really stands out about this show is how well it’s written and acted. It tackles difficult topics like death, divorce, Parkinson’s, and past trauma, which could be overwhelming, but it’s cleverly done because several of the characters are therapists themselves. The show beautifully contrasts their professional lives – helping others – with their personal struggles. You’ll often be surprised by how strangely funny and relatable the situations are.
Each character feels fully developed, adding richness to the narrative. The story avoids feeling contrived – everything, from the plot to the characters’ responses, feels authentic and true to life. It’s a raw, honest, and ultimately moving experience.
Queer Eye Makes Self-Growth Fashionable
I absolutely love Queer Eye on Netflix! It’s way more than just a show about giving people makeovers, though they do totally transform homes and wardrobes each episode. What really gets me is how much the Fab Five – Antoni, Jonathan, Karamo, Tan, and Bobby (and now Jeremiah!) – genuinely care about getting to know the people they’re helping. They want to improve all areas of their lives, which is why having experts in food, lifestyle, and grooming, alongside fashion and interior design, is such a brilliant idea. It’s just so heartwarming to watch!
Each episode tells a touching story, guaranteed to bring both joy and tears. Karamo helps people understand and improve their relationships, both with themselves and others. Antoni focuses on healthy eating, while Tan shows how the right clothes can build self-esteem. Bobby redesigns homes to create comfortable and personalized spaces, and Jonathan demonstrates that grooming is about more than just appearance – it’s about self-care for everyone.
As a movie fan, I’ve noticed the best mentors don’t try to impose their own ideas on the hero. They really listen to where the character is at and give them exactly what they need, nothing more. But, and this is key, they aren’t afraid to be real with them, gently pointing out the flaws that are holding them back. It’s tough love, delivered with a lot of heart.
Trying Highlights the Good in People
Many TV shows rely on familiar stereotypes or exaggerated characters to quickly grab viewers’ attention and simplify difficult subjects. But Trying takes a different approach. It tackles challenging topics like infertility, growing up, and adoption with sensitivity and grace, showing that even amidst these struggles, life can still be joyful and funny.
The heart of the show is the incredibly relatable and funny relationship between Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall). They’re a couple that viewers root for – charming, loving, and surrounded by a great group of friends – and that’s why people keep coming back for each new season.
Friends Reign Supreme in Somebody Somewhere
Premiering in 2022, Somebody Somewhere is a heartwarming show that focuses on the power of friendship and the families we create, while avoiding common clichés about difficult family relationships. The story begins with a significant loss, and grief is a central theme. Knowing it’s inspired by real life makes the show even more moving. Ultimately, the series beautifully explores the journey of self-discovery that can happen even in the midst of sadness.
The show beautifully portrays Sam and Joel, played by Bridget Everett and Jeff Hiller, as a prime example of how deep friendship can be the most meaningful relationship in life. Their connection is the heart of the series, and their conversations and interactions feel both genuine and funny.
This isn’t just a comedy; it feels like something entirely unique. The frequent use of music and singing keeps things light and adds to its distinct style.
