Anime series created from existing manga or light novels often gain popularity more easily than completely original anime. This is because these adapted shows usually already have an established fanbase. However, original anime can still become hugely successful, especially when made by well-known animation studios. SK8 the Infinity is a great example – it’s an original sports anime produced by Studio Bones that premiered in 2021 and was quickly renewed for a second season in 2022. Unfortunately, Studio Bones hasn’t yet shared any details about what to expect in the next season.
Although the animation studio has been consistently working, the return of this series may still be some time away. Studio Bones has been busy with larger projects like My Hero Academia and Marriagetoxin, which likely contributes to the delay, along with budget constraints. Despite this, the studio hasn’t abandoned the popular sports series, as evidenced by the release of an OVA in March 2025 featuring four self-contained stories with characters from the original anime.
What Is SK8 the Infinity About?

The story follows Reki Kyan, a high schooler who loves skateboarding and is a gifted board builder. He works at a skate shop during the day and at night participates in “S,” a dangerous, underground skateboarding race where competitors from across the city push their limits.
I’m totally hooked on this story! It’s amazing because there’s this whole secret world of skateboarding, and the skaters aren’t supposed to let anyone know they’re connected outside of competitions. Things get really intense when Reki suffers a huge loss to this skater called Shadow – he even injures his arm badly and can’t skate for a while. He’s really down about it, but then he meets Langa, a new student who just moved from Canada after losing his father. It feels like their meeting is going to change everything!
Langa starts a part-time job at the same shop as Reki, and the two team up for a delivery. Unexpectedly, Langa finds himself competing in a skateboarding race against a well-known skater. What no one realizes is that despite being new to skateboarding, Langa has years of snowboarding experience from growing up with his father. He surprises the local skateboarding community with his natural talent, and his skills also attract the attention of a shadowy figure.
