Rankin/Bass Productions created some of the most beloved holiday TV specials of all time. For decades, their shows have been a regular part of the holiday season, and today marks the 56th anniversary of their very first one. Even if you don’t recognize the studio’s name, you’ve almost certainly seen their work – from classic 2D animation to more recent stop-motion films. Each special seems to become more iconic than the last, and they’ve been a consistent part of Christmas television for generations.
Can you believe it’s been 56 years since Frosty the Snowman first aired on CBS? While Rankin/Bass made other Christmas specials, this one just feels… special! It perfectly captured the magic of the classic song, even adding that sweet ‘Happy Birthday’ moment, and it’s been a beloved part of my Christmases ever since. Honestly, looking back, it’s totally clear why Frosty became such a huge hit – it’s just pure Christmas joy!
What Is Frosty the Snowman?

Oh man, Frosty the Snowman! It’s based on the classic song by Walter E. Rollins and Steve Nelson, and Jackie Vernon totally nailed the voice of Frosty. Plus, the legendary Jimmy Durante narrated – it’s actually a running joke in the newest season of Smiling Friends! The special pretty much follows the song exactly, but Romeo Muller did a fantastic job adapting it for TV, weaving the song itself throughout the whole thing. It’s just a really charming and faithful adaptation!
This heartwarming story follows a group of children who magically bring a snowman named Frost to life. Frost relies on cold weather to avoid melting, and with the help of a girl named Karen, he tries to reach the North Pole by train. However, when Karen starts to get too cold, Frost selflessly brings her home, even though it means he’s melting. His brave act is rewarded with the magic of Christmas, and Santa invites him to join in the Christmas festivities every year. It’s a cheerful and satisfying conclusion for everyone involved.
Where Is Frosty Now?

Though Frosty the Snowman first aired on CBS 56 years ago, it now calls NBC (and the streaming service Peacock) home. Thankfully, this beloved Christmas tradition has continued uninterrupted for decades, and fans can still enjoy Frosty’s birthday celebration year after year. It’s a truly timeless special that continues to resonate with audiences.
I absolutely love how well Frosty the Snowman holds up! Even though it’s an older special, it doesn’t feel dated at all – the story and characters are still so relatable today. That’s why these Rankin/Bass productions have become such a beloved tradition for so long, and I think they’ll only become more cherished as time goes on. It’s honestly the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit!
