6 Things We Want To See From Rodan In Godzilla’s Monsterverse

Warning: Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, episode 10

It’s been seven years since Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and now Rodan, the King of the Skies, has returned to Legendary’s Monsterverse. The season finale of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters reintroduced Rodan, hinting that he’ll be the main threat in the show’s third season. After dealing with the aquatic Titan X in season two, the Monarch team, along with Godzilla and Kong, will now face a new challenge centered around Rodan.

At the end of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, Isabel Simmons – the daughter of Walter Simmons from Godzilla vs. Kong – didn’t get the access to Skull Island she wanted. Skull Island holds a gateway to Axis Mundi, a hidden world within the Hollow Earth. Isabel originally intended to use Titan X to kill Kong, who was protecting the island. Now, it seems she’s changed her focus and is now targeting Rodan instead.

The season 2 finale showed that, by 2017, Rodan was living inside a volcano in or near Thailand. Lee Shaw, played by Kurt Russell, discovered that Isabel is also tracking Rodan, suggesting she might try to use his location to reach Axis Mundi. This opens up many possibilities for Rodan’s role in the Monsterverse, and hopefully, this is only the beginning of a larger plan for the iconic Godzilla ally.

Rodan’s Ancient History Is Finally Explained

The Monsterverse films have expanded the origins of creatures like Godzilla, Kong, Mothra, King Ghidorah, and the newest addition, Titan X. However, they haven’t revealed much about Rodan, who is primarily known as “the Fire Demon” – a creature that people in Isla de Mara, Mexico, have feared for centuries.

So far, the movie franchise has only given us glimpses into Rodan’s history and potential relationships with other Titans. A painting in Godzilla’s underwater city suggests that a creature like Rodan once fought alongside Godzilla and Mothra against King Ghidorah, and another image hinted at the existence of multiple Rodans at once. In King of the Monsters, Rodan’s egg was found inside the volcano where he lived, but the story of his parents and his origins haven’t been fully revealed yet.

Now that it has a complete season, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has a better opportunity than even King of the Monsters did to explore the history and secrets of Rodan. If Rodan is central to the next story arc, the show can dedicate several episodes to revealing the Titan’s mysteries – like its connection to Godzilla, its place in the world’s power dynamics, and more.

Rodan’s First One-On-One Win

While the Monsterverse’s version of Rodan in Godzilla: King of the Monsters had many appealing qualities, it was a letdown that he never actually won a fight. He lost to both Ghidorah and Mothra (even though he later caused Mothra’s death). Sadly, Rodan hasn’t had much luck winning fair fights in previous versions of the character either.

Rodan hasn’t actually won many fights in the Godzilla movies unless he teamed up with Godzilla. However, he rarely gets a chance to battle on his own. The upcoming third season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters could change that, potentially giving Rodan a solo fight against another Titan monster – either a new one or a familiar face from the Monsterverse.

A Titan Rival For Rodan

If Rodan wins, it opens up exciting new story possibilities for the monster. We’ve seen ancient rivalries become a key part of the Monsterverse – like the war between Godzilla and Kong’s species, Godzilla’s many battles with Ghidorah, and Kong’s history with the Skullcrawlers who killed his family. Now, with Rodan expected to play a big role in the third season of Monarch, he could also get his own Titan rival.

Rodan doesn’t have a set of recurring villains like some other monsters in the Godzilla universe, and creating one would be a fantastic way to expand his character. It would also improve the action, as the Monsterverse could introduce a rival with powers that really stand out against Rodan’s – perhaps another flying creature, but one that uses ice instead of fire.

Rodan vs. Kong

Considering how the story is developing and what viewers expect, it’s almost certain we’ll see a monster fight involving Rodan in the next season. However, it’s unclear which monsters will battle each other. A fight between Kong and Rodan is a popular idea among fans. While Kong would likely win, Rodan’s ability to fly could make the fight challenging, as Kong lacks a direct way to attack him from the air – something Godzilla can do with his atomic breath.

The Monsterverse is setting the stage for a major clash. The show revealed in its season finale that Skull Island is a central hub for interdimensional travel. This means that if a portal opens near Rodan’s volcano, as hinted, he could end up on Skull Island and fight Kong in the next season, either by accident or on purpose.

A Godzilla & Rodan Monsterverse Team-Up

The way Rodan submitted to Godzilla at the end of Godzilla: King of the Monsters hinted at a potential alliance – a team-up between the two titans. Rodan is one of Godzilla’s most frequent allies, appearing on his side in four previous films. Not utilizing that connection in King of the Monsters felt like a missed chance, but it’s easily something the films can address, as Rodan has already acknowledged Godzilla as the dominant Titan.

Rodan wasn’t in the recent Godzilla vs. Kong or Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire movies, which is disappointing for fans. However, there’s still a chance he could team up with Godzilla in the future. The series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters might show that Rodan and Godzilla worked together in 2017 to beat a new monster. If that happens, it would be the first time they’ve fought side-by-side on screen since Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II back in 1993.

Rodan Joins The Fight Against SpaceGodzilla

Even though season 3 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters might seem like the end of Rodan’s story, there’s still potential for the character to return in the Monsterverse. With each new movie increasing the tension, a massive Titan War could happen in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, and Rodan could be part of it.

Everything suggests SpaceGodzilla will be the main villain in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. He’s historically been a powerful enemy of Godzilla, so Godzilla and Kong might need assistance to win. This could mean Godzilla will call on other Titans from the Monsterverse – those who previously recognized his leadership – to help in a final showdown.
