7 Most Powerful Lord of the Rings Villains (Who Weren’t Sauron)

J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories are filled with darkness, but this actually makes their ultimate message of hope even more powerful as we witness heroes overcoming evil to protect their world and loved ones. His incredibly detailed world, compelling characters, and epic tales of heroes and monsters – whether in the books or the films they inspired – ensure his work remains a cornerstone of the high fantasy genre.

Tolkien created many powerful villains, but a few truly stand out—whether because of how they look, the terrible things they did, or their journey to serving Sauron. Here are seven of the most formidable figures in his world, excluding Sauron himself.

7) The Mouth of Sauron

Although we don’t learn many details about the Lieutenant of the Tower of Barad-dûr’s evil actions, it’s clear he was powerful and wicked enough to utter the Dark Lord’s words – words so terrible they physically harmed anyone who spoke them. Once a man, and one of the Black Númenóreans, he became completely devoted to Sauron, eventually abandoning his own name and becoming known only as The Mouth of Sauron. Sauron trusted him so completely that he was the sole individual permitted to speak the Dark Lord’s true Elvish name, though whether this was a privilege granted by Sauron or a power The Mouth possessed himself remains a mystery.

6) Saruman

Saruman, a figure well-known to many, began as a member of the group formed to defeat Sauron. As one of the first Wizards, he initially helped the people of Middle-earth unite against Sauron’s potential return and the darkness it would bring. However, after researching the history of the Rings of Power, Saruman—known as Saruman the White in the movies—was corrupted by dark power and became a devoted follower of Sauron. He built a powerful army by uniting Orcs, the Dunlendings, and creating the Uruk-hai, all in an attempt to conquer Middle-earth. Saruman also possessed a powerful ability to influence people’s minds, earning him the name Curunír.

5) Carcharoth

Carcharoth, the last werewolf created by Morgoth, absolutely earns his place on this list, primarily for being the incredibly powerful creature who devoured a Silmaril – though he was much more than just that. Originally tasked with guarding the gates of Angband and specifically created to fight Huan, the Hound of Valinor, Carcharoth attacked Beren and bit off his hand, taking the Silmaril with it. The jewel burned him from within, driving him into a furious, destructive rampage across Beleriand. Despite being consumed by internal fire, the Silmaril’s power allowed him to break through the protective Girdle of Melian. Ultimately, Huan killed Carcharoth, but not before the werewolf mortally wounded the hound. Still, swallowing a Silmaril and then seriously injuring Huan makes Carcharoth exceptionally formidable.

4) Ungoliant

Ungoliantë, also known by names like Gloomweaver and Del-du-thling, was a powerful, ancient spider spirit who became the mother of Shelob. Initially an ally of Melkor, she eventually rejected him, but an insatiable hunger drove her to consume everything around her, even seeking to devour the light of Aman. After consuming the jewels of the Ñoldor, she and Melkor used the resulting darkness to conceal their advance on Valinor, seeking revenge. Ungoliantë grew so powerful she nearly defeated Melkor, but his cry for help brought the Balrogs, who drove her away. Ultimately, it’s believed she destroyed herself, unable to satisfy her endless hunger.

3) The Witch King of Angmar

This character boasts the most impressive name in the series, and their power lives up to it – especially given their history as Sauron’s most dangerous servant. After a 600-year war that destroyed the kingdom of Arnor, they founded Angmar and ruled for centuries, preparing for Sauron’s return with the other Ringwraiths. Though their true identity remains a mystery, it’s widely believed they were one of the three powerful lords of Númenor, corrupted by the Nine Rings and enslaved to Sauron. This character is also known for killing the last King of Gondor and transforming Minas Ithil into Minas Morgul, later leading Sauron’s forces against those who defended the Fellowship and Frodo.

2) Glaurung, Father of Dragons

Morgoth knew the Orcs weren’t strong enough to win on their own, so he created a far more fearsome weapon: the dragon Glaurung. As the very first dragon forged by Morgoth, Glaurung dramatically shifted the balance of power in the First Age, securing victory for Morgoth at the Battle of Sudden Flames. He was likely the ancestor of all dragons to come. Glaurung possessed a unique power called dragon-spell, allowing him to hypnotize anyone who met his gaze. He later destroyed the city of Nargothrond and relentlessly tormented Turin Turimbar and his family for years. Though Turin eventually killed the dragon, Glaurung used his dragon-spell to first destroy Turin’s family, driving the warrior to despair and ultimately suicide.

1) Morgoth/Melkor

It’s no surprise the original Dark Lord tops the list. He gained immense power by corrupting everything his enemies loved, and while nearly unbeatable, this very darkness ultimately led to his defeat. Before his fall, he built a terrifying alliance including Sauron, Ungoliant, Balrogs, and fire drakes, then unleashed them across Tolkien’s world. He stole the Silmarils and destroyed the Two Lamps and the Trees of the Valar, committing countless other evil acts. Honestly, listing everything he did would be like retelling The Silmarillion itself – so if you’re interested in the full story, we recommend checking it out!
