7 Pokemon That Will Take Over Pokemon Champions’ Meta (& They Aren’t Legendary)

Competitive Pokémon battles are very different from playing the main story games. While you can often beat the main games with just powerful Pokémon, competitive battling is all about strategy. How well your Pokémon work together as a team, using support moves, and choosing the right team members are more important than just having strong individual Pokémon. Currently, the competitive scene is diverse, with many different Pokémon and team combinations proving successful, even though the number of Pokémon available is somewhat limited.

That’s what makes Pokemon Champions so captivating at the moment. The smaller number of available Pokemon creates a dynamic and unpredictable competitive scene, but that won’t stay that way forever. As new Pokemon become available, we’ll likely see strategies from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet become popular again. While powerful Legendary Pokemon can definitely influence the game, the biggest impact will likely come from reliable, common picks that offer consistency, can throw opponents off balance, and work well with other Pokemon. These seven Pokemon, when added to Pokemon Champions, are almost guaranteed to significantly change how the game is played.

7 – Electabuzz & Magmar

Electabuzz and Magmar aren’t usually considered major threats individually, but they’re very helpful in doubles battles. They can use the move Follow Me and offer good support, which allows more powerful teammates to attack freely. What makes Follow Me so effective on these Pokémon is their Vital Spirit ability, which prevents them from being put to sleep by moves like Hypnosis, Sleep Powder, and Spore, keeping your whole team safer.

Redirecting attacks are a powerful strategy in VGC battles, but Electabuzz and Magmar bring a lot to the table beyond that. Electabuzz can control the speed of opposing Pokémon with Electrowave and Thunder Wave, while Magmar can burn physical attackers using Will-O-Wisp. Both Pokémon also have access to Taunt, which can disrupt other support Pokémon. If Eviolite is added to Pokémon Champions, both will become even more durable and difficult to take down. If added, these two will be fantastic support options for many teams.

6 – Clefairy

Clefairy is a consistently strong support Pokémon in competitive battles. Its ability, Friend Guard, helps protect teammates by reducing the damage they take, and it’s often a core part of winning teams. Like Maushold, Clefairy can use the move Follow Me to redirect attacks. This, along with its healing moves, makes Clefairy a very useful Pokémon to have on any team, providing both disruption and support.

Clefairy is a strong support Pokémon thanks to its ability, Friend Guard, which helps keep its teammates alive. Combined with the Eviolite item, Clefairy can also withstand a lot of damage itself. This allows it to stay in battle, support allies, and even attack with moves like Moonblast or disrupt opponents with Encore. Because of all this, Clefairy is a Pokémon that opponents can’t afford to overlook. If added to Pokemon Champions, it could be a valuable and troublesome addition to many teams.

5 – Porygon 2

Trick Room is a very powerful strategy in competitive Pokémon battles, and Porygon2 is one of the best Pokémon to use with it. Thanks to the Eviolite item, Porygon2 is incredibly durable and hard to defeat quickly. This makes it a dependable Pokémon for initiating Trick Room. Because of its naturally low speed, Porygon2 performs well when Trick Room is active, and its Recover move helps it stay in battle long enough to set up another Trick Room when the first one ends.

Porygon2 is more than just a Pokemon used to set up Trick Room strategies. Its unique ability, Analyze, can significantly increase its special attack, making it a strong attacker. It has a diverse movepool, allowing it to effectively battle many different Pokemon. Beyond offense, Porygon2 can also use moves to support its team or disrupt opponents with effects like paralysis or speed reduction. If Porygon2 is added to Pokemon Champions, we might see Trick Room teams become more popular and start using this Pokemon frequently.

4 – Dondozo + Tatsugiri

Dondozo and Tatsugiri are a remarkably strong and unusual pair in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Their special ability combination dramatically boosts their stats, potentially overwhelming opponents. While this strategy limits you to using only these two Pokemon, Dondozo is powerful enough to take on entire teams if your opponent can’t stop it. Without a good counter or the move Haze, this combination can quickly become unstoppable.

Dondozo is most effective when paired with Tatsugiri, but it can also perform well on its own. This Pokémon is a powerful, bulky Water-type with a diverse move set. This creates a strategic element for both players, as opponents must anticipate whether you’ll use the Dondozo and Tatsugiri duo, Dondozo alone, or neither. Just adding these Pokémon to your team forces your opponent to consider bringing specific counters, potentially weakening their team against other threats.

3 – Indeedee

While Terrain has been present in Pokemon Champions, it hasn’t been a dominant strategy due to a lack of reliable setup options. This is expected to change with the introduction of Indeedee, a powerful Terrain setter. Psychic Terrain offers key benefits, preventing priority moves and strengthening Psychic-type attacks. Female Indeedee is more commonly used because it’s more durable and has a wider range of supporting moves. It’s a great fit for Trick Room teams and will likely make that strategy more popular.

Besides being used in Psychic Terrain or Trick Room strategies, Female Indeedee is a very supportive Pokémon. Its Follow Me move redirects attacks, protecting teammates, and Helping Hand increases a partner’s attack power. This is particularly effective when paired with Pokémon that use Expanding Force. It can also learn useful moves like Fake Out, Reflect, and Light Screen, though these aren’t commonly seen. Indeedee might not appear dangerous at first, but it can take control of a battle if it stays in play.

2 – Rillaboom

Rillaboom is a highly reliable Pokémon in competitive battles and is expected to be a key player in strategies focused on terrain control. When it enters a fight, it creates Grassy Terrain, which reduces the power of the common move Earthquake and provides benefits like healing for grounded Pokémon and boosted power for Grass-type attacks. It also allows the use of the powerful move Grassy Glide. Beyond this, Rillaboom can learn a wide variety of moves, making it adaptable, and it plays a role similar to Incineroar, a historically dominant competitive Pokémon.

Rillaboom is a frustrating opponent in Pokémon battles, largely due to its access to the Fake Out move. Combined with Taunt, it can really disrupt an opponent’s strategy. But Rillaboom isn’t just about disruption – it’s also incredibly strong offensively, with powerful moves like Wood Hammer, High Horsepower, and Grassy Glide. It can even use U-turn to switch out, reset the battlefield with Grassy Terrain, and then use Fake Out again. Rillaboom, when paired with Incineroar, creates a particularly strong Fake Out combination that was dominant in Scarlet and Violet, and is likely to be just as effective in Pokémon Champions.

1 – Amoonguss

Amoonguss is a remarkably strong support Pokémon, and could be a major problem in Pokémon Champions if the Safety Goggles item isn’t available. It can disrupt battles by putting opponents to sleep with Spore or redirecting attacks with Rage Powder, protecting its teammates. What makes it especially difficult to deal with is its high health and the Regenerator ability, which lets it recover health whenever it switches out of battle. If Amoonguss is allowed, players will need to carefully consider their team’s positioning more than ever before, and that’s saying something given all its other advantages.

Amoonguss is a versatile Pokémon with access to moves like Pollen Puff, which can both heal teammates and hurt opponents. It also learns Sludge Bomb, a powerful attack especially effective against Fairy-types such as Mega Floette. While often seen on teams built around the Trick Room strategy to compensate for its slow speed, Amoonguss can perform well in other team compositions too. Its ability to fit into common Grass, Fire, and Water team cores makes it a strong Pokémon, and players can expect to encounter it frequently once it’s released in Pokémon Champions.
