7 Sci-Fi Movies That Are Riddled With Plot Holes (& How Much They Matter)

I’ve always loved sci-fi, and it’s given us so many unforgettable movies! But even the best ones aren’t flawless. Because sci-fi tries to appeal to everyone, it’s always been a huge hit with audiences. The really great films become truly iconic, sticking with us for years and shaping the future of the genre. Still, with all the complex ideas sci-fi explores, it’s easy for movies to end up with some pretty big plot holes, even the popular ones.

Many science fiction movies suffer from noticeable gaps in their logic – plot holes that are hard to overlook. While these can be annoying, they don’t always ruin the story. Whether major and disruptive or small and just irritating, a lot of sci-fi films are full of these kinds of inconsistencies.

7) Armageddon (1998)

As a big fan of disaster movies, I still love Armageddon, but it’s hard to ignore that one huge plot hole! The whole movie is about these amazing oil drillers NASA recruits to save Earth from an asteroid. But honestly, wouldn’t it have been easier to just teach astronauts how to drill? Everyone always points that out, and it kind of makes the whole premise fall apart. It’s a classic, sure, but that one thing really does hurt the story.

6) Back to the Future (1985)

The Back to the Future trilogy has a few plot holes, but many of them actually come from the rules established in the very first movie. The original 1985 film introduces some logical inconsistencies – for instance, Marty’s parents would likely have recognized their grown-up son. There are also a few scientifically improbable moments. However, these issues are minor and don’t detract from the film’s quality, allowing it to remain a beloved sci-fi classic.

5) The Matrix (1999)

While The Matrix is a truly impressive sci-fi film from the 90s, it does have some flaws in its story. There are a few plot holes, like the idea of humans being used as batteries and how Cipher was able to move freely in and out of the Matrix on his own. The battery issue isn’t as significant as it seems, as there are possible alternative explanations for the machines’ behavior. The problems with Cipher are trickier to address, but ultimately don’t detract much from the main story.

4) Gravity (2013)

While Gravity is visually stunning and a thrilling sci-fi experience, its story has some serious problems. The plot relies on inaccurate science, and a major event – Kowalski’s death – simply doesn’t make sense given the laws of physics. This significant plot hole unfortunately undermines the entire film, making it a visually impressive movie that’s ultimately frustrating to watch.

3) Minority Report (2002)

Though many consider Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report a sci-fi classic, its story has a significant flaw. The premise – the hero being accused of a future murder committed before he’s even met the victim – creates a major plot hole. Because the crime can’t be planned in advance, much of the story doesn’t quite add up. It’s unfortunate, as Minority Report is otherwise a great film, but this flaw noticeably weakens the overall experience.

2) Planet of the Apes (1968)

The Planet of the Apes films have become iconic in science fiction, and many fans still consider the first movie the best. While it’s a great film, it does have some plot holes. It’s odd that the apes all speak perfect English after so long, since languages change over time. Even more confusing is why the humans lost their ability to speak. These issues don’t ruin the movie’s enjoyment, but they are noticeable and a little frustrating.

1) The Core (2003)

As a huge movie fan, I’ve seen some pretty wild plots, but The Core really takes the cake when it comes to unbelievable stories. It’s a disaster movie about restarting the Earth’s core with…nuclear explosions. Honestly, the science is so off and there are just so many logical leaps that the whole story falls apart if you think about it for even a second. The plot holes are just massive and completely ruin the movie, in my opinion.
