First appearing in the show’s first season, Evil Morty proved to be a formidable opponent, capable of matching Rick Sanchez’s intelligence. Though defeated once, he was imprisoned in a distant galaxy, hinting at a future return. The creators recently revealed that Star Trek served as inspiration for developing this new major antagonist.
Recently, Rick and Morty showrunner Scott Marder explained to ScreenRant how they developed Evil Morty as a powerful, unpredictable force, similar to the character of Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Q was known for testing Captain Picard and the Enterprise crew with challenging situations, and Marder’s team wanted a similar figure for Rick. They envisioned Evil Morty as someone who always seemed to be one step ahead, possessing a unique power that allowed him to manipulate events and even challenge Rick himself. This concept heavily influenced the direction of the season, starting with the premiere episode.
Rick And Morty’s Star Talks Evil Morty
Harry Belden, who now voices both Morty and Evil Morty after Justin Roiland left the show, discussed Evil Morty’s recent return. He explained that Rick isn’t acting on his own, but is being manipulated by Evil Morty. However, Belden also thinks Evil Morty sees value in Rick, noting that he’s the only one Rick can truly share and discuss complex scientific ideas with – even more so than other Ricks. It’s a unique connection between the two.
Spencer Grammer, who voices Summer Smith, shared her excitement about Evil Morty’s return, calling it a satisfying development. She particularly enjoys how Rick is always several steps ahead, planning everything, which deepens her appreciation for his character. Grammer jokingly imagined a ‘Shawshank Redemption’-style escape for Evil Morty from his Time Prison. She praised the actor’s performance, noting the clear distinction between Rick and Evil Morty and how well they play off each other. With the ninth season just beginning, fans might not have to wait long to see Evil Morty back on screen.
