The Hulk is a hugely popular and important character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having been a founding Avenger from near the very beginning. While he’s remained a consistent presence throughout the franchise and has evolved over time, the MCU sometimes seems to overlook key parts of his original story.
The more we learn about the Hulk’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the more inconsistencies become apparent. The franchise seems to have forgotten important details and character developments established in earlier films, particularly elements crucial to his growth. These overlooked parts of Hulk’s history are increasingly frustrating as they continue to be ignored.
7) His Relationship With Black Widow

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen a number of romances, but the connection between Hulk and Black Widow is one of the most quickly overlooked. While Avengers: Age of Ultron introduced a significant romantic subplot between them – a relationship destined for tragedy – later movies seemed to ignore it completely. This was especially noticeable in Avengers: Endgame, where Black Widow’s heroic death didn’t seem to affect Hulk much, despite their prior connection.
6) Skaar Probably Shouldn’t Exist

The Marvel Cinematic Universe now has multiple Hulks, but it appears to have overlooked a major inconsistency. The Disney+ show She-Hulk: Attorney at Law introduced Hulk’s son, Skaar, without explaining how he was conceived. Previously, Bruce Banner stated he was infertile, making Skaar’s birth a plot hole. To make matters worse, the MCU hasn’t mentioned Skaar since his initial appearance, suggesting the storyline may have been forgotten.
5) Hulk Killed Quite A Few Innocents On Sakaar

The Hulk’s ‘Gladiator Hulk’ form, seen in Thor: Ragnarok, is one of his most formidable. The movie reveals he won two years of arena battles on Sakaar, and each win involved killing his opponent. This implies the Hulk killed many unwilling combatants, and it’s surprising the films haven’t addressed the fact that he has a lot of innocent blood on his hands.
4) When He First Appeared

It’s well known that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has subtly changed how Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk fits into the story since his introduction. While it’s reasonable they haven’t explained why the character was recast within the universe, the constant changes to Hulk’s origin story are confusing. The MCU seems to have repeatedly altered when Hulk first appeared, almost as if they’ve forgotten the details themselves.
3) Banner Wanted To Cure Him

Everyone knows the Hulk is incredibly hard to kill, but people often forget that Bruce Banner used to actively search for a cure to his condition. The original Incredible Hulk movie focused on Banner’s efforts to reverse the effects of the gamma radiation, but this goal was dropped in later films. By the time Avengers: Endgame arrived, the storyline had completely moved away from a cure, instead having Banner merge with the Hulk to create a single being – a change that frustratingly happened without being shown on screen.
2) He’s Technically A Super Soldier

As a big Marvel fan, I’ve noticed something a little confusing about the Hulk’s backstory. The MCU has sometimes shown that the Hulk came about because scientists were trying to recreate the super-soldier serum that made Captain America strong. But then, with Red Hulk, it seemed like just gamma radiation alone was enough to cause the transformation. It’s a small detail, but it feels like the franchise is forgetting its own rules about how the Hulk originally got his powers – like, was the serum involved or not? It’s a bit frustrating when established origins get muddled like that.
1) How Powerful He Actually Is

Few Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes could win against Hulk in a straight-up fight. He’s consistently proven to be one of the franchise’s most powerful characters, but the films often don’t fully showcase his incredible strength. Since he first appeared, the MCU has repeatedly reduced Hulk’s power, likely to maintain a balance between heroes and villains. Unfortunately, this makes it feel like the movies have forgotten just how strong and intimidating Hulk is supposed to be – one of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel Universe.
