8 Rescued After Roller Coaster Mishap Left Riders Stuck 100 Feet High

Eight roller coaster riders have been brought to safety.

On May 28th, a problem with the Iron Shark roller coaster at Pleasure Pier in Galveston, Texas, left it stuck 100 feet in the air. After several hours, all eight riders were safely rescued.

The fire department responded to an incident at the pier shortly after 5:00 p.m. local time. According to Terry Turney, the pier’s chief operating officer, the ride had a problem as it started to go up. However, the ride is designed to stop automatically if something goes wrong, and it did, ensuring everyone’s safety. The priority then became getting the eight riders to safety.

So, we called the fire department for help and made sure everyone got off the ride safely.

Fire Chief Mike Varela Jr. stated that crews arrived at approximately 5:30 p.m. to help the riders. They were individually secured in safety harnesses and carefully lowered to the ground using a truck-mounted basket.

According to Varela, the rescue team successfully calmed and reassured the people they were helping, letting them know the equipment would ensure their safety.

I was so relieved to hear the riders were okay, though understandably a bit shaken after what happened. But honestly, they told me that as soon as they were back on their feet, a huge wave of joy washed over them – it was amazing to see!

The Iron Shark roller coaster at Pleasure Pier can reach speeds of 52 mph and includes a thrilling 100-foot drop.

Video showed the frightening scene of students from Energized for STEM Academy Middle School and STEM Academy High School—identified by the Houston school district—stuck upside down on the ride. According to NBC News, the rescuer, Varela, was most worried about them getting too much sun and becoming dehydrated while they were stuck.

Varela praised the crews’ performance today, saying he was extremely impressed with their readiness and training. He noted they were prepared and responded effectively when needed.

Regarding the Iron Shark roller coaster, Turney stated that a complete inspection of the ride is currently being performed. He also expressed gratitude for the fire department’s fast response and help.
