It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Captain America: Civil War came out! Released in 2016, the movie arrived when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was incredibly popular. It felt like a fantastic follow-up to both The Winter Soldier and an unofficial continuation of The Avengers. Even now, 10 years later, “Avengers 2.5” still holds up remarkably well.
As a huge movie fan, what always struck me about Captain America: Civil War is that it wasn’t just a superhero brawl – it presented a really thought-provoking argument that genuinely divided audiences, even within the Marvel fanbase! We were all firmly on Team Cap or Team Iron Man, and honestly, those debates still pop up today. Beyond the story, the movie really proved that directors Joe and Anthony Russo were masters at handling a huge cast of characters and making everyone shine.
After a decade, the Russo brothers are gearing up for more big Marvel films, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. Watching Civil War now as part of our MCU rewatch series, it’s clear why Marvel Studios continues to rely on their talent.
10 Years Later, The MCU’s Civil War Debate Rages On (Captain America or Iron Man?)
The central debate of Civil War remains one of the MCU’s most fascinating and complex conflicts.
On Tony Stark’s side, the argument is fairly straightforward.
The Avengers have always tried to save the world, but their battles have often resulted in a lot of destruction. Because of incidents like the fights in New York and Sokovia, world governments now want to keep a closer watch on the team. They’re proposing the Sokovia Accords, which would mean the Avengers would be overseen by a committee from the United Nations.
Haunted by the fallout from his and the Avengers’ previous actions, Iron Man now strongly supports stricter rules, oversight, and boundaries to prevent future problems.
Many agree with me that Steve Rogers’ Captain America had a better reason to oppose the Sokovia Accords, based on his strong moral principles.
Steve understands the need for more oversight after recent errors, but he strongly objects to the government controlling when and where the Avengers can operate. He doesn’t trust governments to always act in the best interest of everyone, particularly after what happened with the Winter Soldier and the discovery of Hydra’s infiltration of SHIELD. Governments are run by people who have their own goals, and those goals can shift with political changes and new leaders.
I get where Tony’s coming from and why he feels guilty, but handing power to governments – which can be just as flawed as the people they’re trying to control – isn’t the answer. Although Civil War does a great job of showing both sides of the story, I still side with Captain America every time I watch it. The fact that people are still debating this movie ten years later is a testament to how well it explored the conflict.
Civil War Was The Russo Bros. Proving Ground For Future Avengers Movies (Including Doomsday)
Although Civil War has Captain America in the title, it really is “Avengers 2.5” at the end of the day.
When Civil War came out, the movie had a large team of heroes: Iron Man, Captain America, the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Falcon, War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, plus the new additions of Black Panther and Spider-Man. It would have been challenging to give everyone enough screen time, but the directors, the Russos, handled it expertly. Each character had important moments and felt integral to the story – no one felt like a simple cameo.
One of the most remarkable achievements of this movie is how seamlessly it introduces both Black Panther and Spider-Man into the story. T’Challa’s journey from seeking revenge becomes a powerful emotional thread, and Tom Holland’s first appearance as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still considered a standout moment.
After the huge success of Civil War, it was natural for Marvel to trust the Russo brothers with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, especially with their strong work on films like the excellent The Winter Soldier. Civil War really solidified their position as key creative figures and helped contribute significantly to the MCU’s overall success.
With major upcoming movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, it makes sense that Marvel is bringing back the directors who have previously delivered their most successful team-up films.
10 Years Later, Chris Evan & Robert Downey Jr. Will Be Facing Off Again
You know, rewatching Civil War after all these years is wild because it hits different now that Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. are gearing up for another showdown in the MCU. It’s crazy to think about, especially since Tony Stark’s arc ended with Endgame, but now RDJ is coming back as Doctor Doom! Still, the thought of Downey facing off against Steve Rogers again… it’s a full-circle moment for the franchise, and the fact that the Russos might be directing it again just makes it even cooler.
There’s a possible link to the movie Civil War that could be really compelling. The film concludes with Tony Stark finding out how his parents actually died. Discovering that Bucky Barnes was responsible for their deaths – particularly his mother’s – instantly enrages Tony and makes it impossible for him to see reason at that moment.
If Doctor Doom’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe mirrors his comic book beginnings, his initial drive might come from the death of his mother, Cynthia von Doom. Although the specifics will likely be different, there could be similarities between how Tony Stark struggled emotionally in Civil War and what motivates Doom in a potential Doomsday storyline.
Even now, Captain America: Civil War stands out as a strong foundation for everything that followed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It skillfully set the stage for the concluding chapters of the Infinity Saga and proved to be a creatively successful venture for Marvel Studios, largely thanks to the directing duo, the Russo Brothers. Because of all this, Civil War remains one of the most enjoyable MCU films to revisit.
Avengers: Doomsday releases in theaters on December 18th from Marvel Studios.
