Right now is an exceptional period for fans of samurai manga, as there are some fantastic updates coming our way! VIZ Media is offering a deluxe edition of the acclaimed series “Vagabond,” ensuring one of the greatest samurai stories ever told receives premium treatment. Additionally, Dark Horse Comics is broadening its collection of deluxe manga with a reissue of the iconic samurai tale, “Lone Wolf and Cub.” Dark Horse has built a reputation as a top player in the industry for exceptional deluxe manga releases, previously publishing exquisite editions of “Berserk,” “Trigun,” “Blade of the Immortal,” “Planetes,” and “Hellsing.
Originally penned by Kazuo Koike and beautifully illustrated by Goseki Kojima, “Lone Wolf and Cub” stands as an enduring and impactful masterpiece in the realm of samurai manga. First appearing in serial form for Futabasha’s “Weekly Manga Action” back in 1970, it continued until 1976. Not content with their previous releases, Dark Horse is now introducing hardcover versions of the English editions.
Lone Wolf and Cub Finally Gets a Deluxe Edition Manga
Dark Horse Comics is planning to release an upgraded, deluxe edition of the popular series “Lone Wolf and Cub“. The new hardcover versions will replace the current trade paperbacks. The announcement mentions that the design of the cover art is being revamped, much like their iconic re-release of the series “Berserk“.
I’m absolutely thrilled about the fresh new design! The minimalist approach is evident, yet the iconic logo lettering remains unchanged. However, the font has been subtly improved and positioned at the bottom right corner. Above it, you’ll find the names of Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima. In the top left, there’s a stunning art strip, with the volume number neatly tucked below. The cover itself sports a muted brown hue. As for the binding, it’s still under wraps whether it will be leatherbound like Berserk or deluxe hardback like Blade of the Immortal. Can’t wait to see more!
Starting December 10th, the first installment of the enhanced editions of “Lone Wolf and Cub” will be available for purchase. The second volume is scheduled to hit shelves on March 24th next year. Each new edition encompasses roughly two and a half of the original paperback volumes. In total, five such volumes have been planned. At the time of release, each volume will cost $54.99.
Lone Wolf and Cub Is a Criminally Underrated Series
Although it may appear surprising to label “Lone Wolf and Cub” as underappreciated due to its significant impact on the samurai genre, manga, and Japanese cinema, the truth is that it doesn’t receive the recognition and admiration it deserves from modern audiences. In my view, “Lone Wolf and Cub” ought to be regarded alongside the esteemed works such as “Vagabond,” “Berserk,” and “Blade of the Immortal.” I hope the release of the new deluxe editions will rekindle interest in this outstanding series.
