In the latest installment of The Shield Hero, our hero Naofumi and his band of adventurers are back for a fourth season, and tensions are running high! To shed some light on Naofumi’s journey through time, we sat down with the Japanese voice actor of Naofumi, Kaito Ishikawa, and series producer Ten Kimura to discuss the upcoming season. They shared insightful insights not only about Naofumi and his universe but also The Rising of The Shield Hero’s significance within the isekai genre.
Initially, voice actor Kaito Ishikawa touched upon the time Naofumi spent off-screen between seasons three and four. He suggested that due to the ongoing developments in the anime, Naofumi might depend more on his team and have greater trust in them. As a collective, they are growing, but season four promises larger obstacles and formidable foes, so Naofumi’s faith in his allies will strengthen further compared to earlier seasons.
In further detail, Ishikawa discussed the integration of the Q’Ten Lo empire into the upcoming season and how Raphtalia’s homeland might complicate her relationship with Naofumi. “In the first season, we saw their initial meeting, but it was only in season three that her background was fully developed. With season four approaching, I believe we will delve deeper into her past than ever before. For me, understanding someone’s roots helps build trust, as it provides insight into how they think and perceive others. Now that we know more about her background, their trust in each other is likely to grow even stronger during season four. This newfound knowledge has influenced my perspective on the character, as I have gained a deeper appreciation for who she is.
The Future of The Shield Hero
From Ishikawa to producer Ten Kimura, we moved on to the topic of what the future holds for “The Rising of The Shield Hero” and potential adaptations of its ongoing source material. He expressed that while he can’t make any definitive statements, they are extremely grateful for the support they’ve received so far and believe they could possibly do something in the future with continued backing.
After the release of “The Rising of The Shield Hero”, the isekai genre has grown significantly with an increasing number of series joining its ranks. In light of this growing competition, Kimura reflected on Naofumi’s role within the anime realm: “Initially, when creator Aneko Yusagi wrote the manga, they weren’t focused on how it would fit into the genre but rather wanted to share a story. Some decisions might have been instinctive, but it seems that the author may not have deliberately positioned it this way. Often, isekai anime transport you and offer an easy experience. However, ‘The Rising of The Shield Hero’ stands out as the term ‘rising’ aptly describes its unique approach to the genre, as the hero starts with nothing, offering a fresh perspective on the isekai world.
