Matt Smith, renowned for his roles in “Doctor Who” and “House of the Dragon”, has been selected to portray a villain in the upcoming “Star Wars: Starfighter“. Joining Ryan Gosling from “Project Hail Mary” and Mia Goth from “Pearl”, Smith will bring his talents to the galaxy, far, far away. According to “Deadline”, which broke the news initially, Smith beat out several other contenders for the role after meeting with director Shawn Levy. However, details regarding the character are currently being kept secret.
Surprisingly, it was claimed that the actor appeared in a significant part of the movie “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019, but this didn’t happen as expected. There were whispers that Smith, known for his villain roles in “Terminator Genisys” (2015) and “Morbius” (2022), could have been cast as a cloned Emperor Palpatine in J.J. Abrams’ final installment of the nine-episode “Star Wars” series, but this didn’t come to pass.
Smith shared during an episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast in 2021 that he almost landed a role in “Star Wars”, but the opportunity slipped away. He explained that the role he was considered for eventually became unnecessary, and as a result, he never got to be part of the “Star Wars” universe.
Inquired about if his hidden character was indeed Palpatine’s cloned “son” Dathan, later revealed to be the father of Daisy Ridley’s Jedi Rey, Smith hinted playfully, “I’m afraid I can’t disclose that information, but it was quite intriguing. It was an exciting role and idea.
He went on to explain, ‘This element was crucial, it was pivotal in the plot, similar to a groundbreaking Star Wars event.’ However, despite its importance, it didn’t quite manage to capture everyone’s attention fully.
It’s uncertain if Smith’s character in the movie “Starfighter” is a continuation from “The Rise of Skywalker,” but director Shawn Levy has classified his film as an independent one, taking place roughly five years after “Episode IX.
Levy stated at Star Wars Celebration in April that “It’s not a prequel or sequel, but rather a fresh journey.” He further explained that Starfighter is set during an era not previously explored, which Lucasfilm has labeled as the New Jedi Order period.
Earlier reports suggested that the role of Goth in this production will be as an antagonist, one of the “wicked chasers” who are after the protected young character, overseen by Gosling’s character.
Or simply: In earlier news, it was revealed that Goth is going to play a villain, one of the bad guys pursuing the young character guarded by Gosling’s character.
Disney has scheduled the release of its first Star Wars film since The Rise of Skywalker, titled Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, for May 22, 2026. Another film called Starfighter is set to follow on May 28, 2027.
Or more concisely:
