Luke Grimes Says ‘Nobody’ on ‘Yellowstone’ Wanted the Show to End

Despite the widespread chatter suggesting the conclusion of “Yellowstone“, Luke Grimes, along with most of the cast and team, remained relatively unfazed by the external uproar, choosing instead to focus on the continuation of the series rather than its potential end.

During the final day of filming, I felt it was my farewell as Kayce. It was all up to me then, Grimes shared in a recent interview with People on June 25th. For seven years, I embodied a character that I’ll never meet again, except for his hat and coat hanging in my wardrobe. It wasn’t until around three or four months later that everything fell into place for the [spinoff] series.

Grimes didn’t expect to be so affected by his time as Kayce Dutton coming to an end.

He remarked that the experience turned out to be much more significant than he had anticipated. Dismantling that event was quite challenging, incredibly so, and it felt odd to say, but it was almost emotional. It was as if I was parting ways with a family in some sense.

It was particularly tough for everyone involved, including Grimes, to part ways as the series came to an end. He expressed that no one wanted the production to conclude, and this sentiment seemed to resonate among fans, cast members, and those at the studio and network too.

In 2018, the television series Yellowstone debuted on Paramount and focused on the Dutton family, who possess the largest ranch in Montana. The captivating performance of Kevin Costner as the family’s patriarch, John Dutton, drew viewers in, but other characters such as Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Gil Birmingham, Cole Hauser, and Kelsey Asbille kept them hooked for five seasons. The behind-the-scenes turmoil was also a significant factor that kept audiences engaged.

Regardless of its popularity, the series experienced a less-than-satisfying conclusion due to issues during the final season. These problems included delays and speculations about Kevin Costner’s sudden departure (it was revealed in 2023 that he wouldn’t be coming back, and eventually, John’s character was written off in the season 5B opener).

Costner, at 70 years old, had previously refuted rumors that he departed from Yellowstone because of a disagreement with creator Taylor Sheridan. “I’ve taken quite a bit of flak from those guys, and I know where a lot of it is coming from,” he said to Deadline in May 2024. “I chose not to engage. But if you know me well enough, Yellowstone was my top priority, and suggesting anything else would be incorrect. I didn’t start any of those issues. They did.

Costner explained, “I departed when it was convenient for them, which proved challenging for me. It turned out there were no scripts for season 5B. They required an additional four days just to finish the first eight episodes. I chose to leave early so they could have a complete set of eight. I felt sorry that the viewers didn’t get all ten.

After Costner decided to pursue other opportunities, some of his co-stars expressed interest in reprising their roles. Besides Grimes, Reilly (age 47) and Hauser (age 50), have been chosen for a spinoff series that focuses on the adventures of Beth and Rip.

Grimes expressed that he aimed to ensure the CBS’ spinoff Y: Marshals had a genuine narrative, was engaging, and felt authentic. He mentioned if it were just about the character being happy all the time, it wouldn’t be exciting. However, he added that the concept proposed to him was exceptional, intriguing, and captivating, hinting that it would also hook the audience.

Marshals is set to portray Kayce’s journey as he becomes part of an elite U.S. Marshal team. Utilizing his abilities as a cowboy and Navy SEAL, he will deliver justice in Montana, where he, along with his fellow marshals, must juggle personal matters, duty, and the emotional toll that comes from being the final defense against violence in this region.

Grimes hinted that there will be some acquainted individuals and also many fresh ones, making the overall experience uncertain. Going back with changed conditions will bring about a sort of transition for her.
