An anticipated exclusive game for Xbox Series X, set to launch soon, has unfortunately been scrapped. What’s striking, however, is that the response from Xbox enthusiasts hasn’t been one of shock or surprise. Normally, when a significant upcoming title gets cancelled, it takes everyone by surprise. In this instance, though, it appears that Xbox fans had anticipated the cancellation and, upon closer inspection, their foresight seems justified.
In July 2025, three video games slated for release on Xbox – “Perfect Dark”, “Everwild”, and an unnamed MMORPG from ZeniMax Online Studios (the creators of “The Elder Scrolls Online”) – were unexpectedly scrapped. This decision was made as part of a large-scale workforce reduction at both Xbox and its owner, Microsoft. Initially, the news caused alarm among Xbox enthusiasts who wondered about the future of their favorite games. However, things seemed to settle down, leading many to believe that the cancellations were finalized and other games would remain unaffected. Regrettably, this turned out not to be the case.
Despite managing to clear some cancellations in July, Xbox opted to add one more at the end of summer. Contrary to earlier reports indicating its safety, Xbox recently announced the cancellation of another upcoming game from Xbox Game Studios – Contraband, developed by Avalanche Studios, renowned for their work on the Just Cause series.
It’s understandable that some people were taken aback considering the previous information; the game appeared to have survived the July cancellations and news suggesting its safety. However, Xbox fans had reasons to be concerned about its potential cancellation, as it seemed that the development process was not progressing smoothly.
The cooperative smuggler game was initially announced in 2021 for PC and Xbox Series X, but there was no news about it for the rest of that year and throughout 2022, 2023, and 2024. Fans finally received an update on the game in mid-2025, four years later, only to find out that it had been cancelled. This outcome was something Xbox fans had suspected might happen.
One Xbox enthusiast found it strange that for years, all we got was a title for this game with no further updates or information. Another user seemed unsurprised by the news of its cancellation.”
“A fan of Xbox expressed confusion about only seeing the name of the game for years without any additional details or updates. Meanwhile, another user appeared unphased by the announcement of its cancellation.
A third comment strongly emphasized the sentiment: “I figured it out, we never said a word about the match. It was all for nothing after four years.
On the Reddit forum dedicated to Xbox, most responses to this announcement share similar feelings as expressed earlier. Those Xbox enthusiasts who were not closely watching developments might be taken aback by yet another canceled game in the pipeline, but those who have been attentively following Xbox Game Studios likely anticipated this move.
