In a recent discussion, writer Russell T. Davies shared insights about his connection with the popular series, “Doctor Who,” following some challenging periods for BBC’s enduring science-fiction program. Back in 2005, Davies reintroduced “Doctor Who” to contemporary viewers after a 16-year absence, and he resumed his role as showrunner in 2023 with the aim of reinventing the show amid growing criticism and unease. Regrettably, this transformation didn’t unfold as anticipated by anyone, especially Davies himself, who has now expressed that “Doctor Who” might not be engraved on his tombstone.
Davies openly expressed his affection for “Doctor Who” in an interview with The Big Issue (as reported by Deadline) this past August. However, he doesn’t claim ownership over it. Instead, he emphasizes that the shows he personally owns and creates, such as “Queer as Folk,” “Cucumber,” “It’s a Sin,” and his upcoming project “Tip Toe,” which he calls “the strongest thing I’ve written,” are what he believes will define his legacy. It’s worth noting that while Davies has been highly praised for his work on “Doctor Who,” these statements align with recent developments in his career.

In 2023, Russell T. Davies returned to revive the specials for Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary, and subsequently introduced two seasons with Ncuti Gatwa playing the fifteenth version of the time-traveling Doctor. However, the response to Gatwa’s two-season stint didn’t meet initial expectations, fueling rumors that the collaboration between BBC and Disney, which increased Doctor Who‘s budget, may have ended prematurely. This led to Gatwa’s departure from the show in somewhat controversial circumstances, potentially leaving a sour feeling for Davies.
Following the season 15 finale titled “The Reality War,” which concluded with Billie Piper’s return as the Doctor replacing Jodie Whittaker, there is a lack of certainty regarding the future of the longest-running science fiction show on television. Neither new seasons nor further details about Piper’s Sixteenth Doctor have been announced yet. Also, Russell T Davies, the creator, has not confirmed whether he will continue as showrunner. His recent statements suggest that he might be moving away from Doctor Who, which could potentially signal trouble for the series in the future.
Anticipated to drop later this year is a five-episode spinoff of “Doctor Who,” titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea. However, the continuation of the original show remains uncertain. Remarks by Russell T. Davies have further muddied the waters regarding its return to our television screens. Some speculate that a short break could benefit the show, but Davies’ experience with “Doctor Who” appears to have turned sour. Yet, optimism persists for a promising future for this iconic series.
